Job Description


QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master’s degree (or higher)

2. Combination of five years teaching and/or administrative experience

3. Other qualifications deemed essential for successful performance in the position


REPORTS TO:
Executive Director


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES*

  • Oversees the day to day operations of the special education referral system in the school(s).
  • Ensures that paperwork is complete, up-to-date and accurate for all students with disabilities in the school(s). (Referral data, test reports, parent releases, and Individual Education Programs).
  • Assists in establishing department curriculum objectives, and develops a plan for the implementation and evaluation of these objectives.
  • Assists in the recruitment, screening, hiring, training, and assigning of school personnel.
  • Conducts department meetings and attends relevant school and professional meetings as necessary.
  • Assumes responsibility for the ordering, inventorying, and distributing of all departmental instructional materials.
  • Evaluates teacher performance and recommends to the Executive Director renewal or non-renewal of department members according to established procedures.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Advises the Executive Director on the department’s budgetary needs.
  • Monitors lesson plans according to school’s established procedure.
  • Develops and maintains a staff reference library.
  • Provides orientation for substitute teachers and new personnel.
  • Interprets the objectives and programs of special education for the Executive Director, administration, faculty, staff, and the school community where appropriate.
  • Assists in identifying and utilizing community resources for the school(s) programs.
  • Assists with the review and approval of all staff development forms from special education staff in conjunction with the Executive Director.
  • Maintains knowledge of current state and federal special education laws and regulations.
  • Coordinates evaluation and re-evaluation of students with disabilities.
  • Coordinates the referral process for newly referred students.
  • Assists in the scheduling of IEP and placement meetings for students with disabilities.
  • Assists in the development of IEP’s for students with disabilities.
  • Schedules staff in conjunction with the Principal to best meet the needs of the disabled students within the school(s).
  • Chairs IEP meetings for the most severe (involved) students with disabilities which may require additional supports that may impact the school-level budget.
  • Coordinates the transitioning of students with disabilities from elementary school(s) to middle school or middle school to high school.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Twelve months employment/Contract/FLSA Exempt


EVALUATION:
The performance of the Exceptional Children’s Director will be evaluated by the Executive Director.
