North Dakota State University is Hiring a Research Specialist Near Fargo, ND

Description & Details:

The Center for Social Research is a recognized applied research institute focusing on interdisciplinary socio-economic research on issues relevant to the North Dakota economy, its communities, and its residents. For more than three decades, the Center has had a successful track record of projects that focus on timely, North Dakota specific applied research, program evaluations, impact and needs assessments, and data collection and dissemination. Center capabilities are broad and flexible to enable Center staff to respond to the state’s ever-changing research needs. The CSR is looking for a Data Analyst to conduct data management and data visualization activities for specific interdisciplinary applied research projects. Activities include data mining from publicly available and non-published secondary data sources, automation of data retrieval processes, data management, data analysis, and data visualization. Candidates should be able to manage large data sets and be proficient with data analysis and data visualization tools such as Excel, R, Python, SQL, Tableau, and Power BI. The Data Analyst should be able to perform all duties within expected time frames and work harmoniously and productively with other members of the research team. This is a temporary position (twelve months) funded solely by grant and contract funds.


Advertised Salary:
Commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Business Analytics, Computer Engineering, Data Science or related field.
  • Demonstrated skills in data management and analysis, data modeling, interactive dashboard design specifically using Tableau and Power BI.
  • Expertise with various data analysis packages including Excel, R or Python, SQL.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated work experience in data analytics and dashboard design.
  • One or more years experience in applied research; preferably in a grant/contract-funded research environment.
  • Familiar with North Dakota and regional social and socio-economic conditions and considerations and willingness to stay abreast and be knowledgeable of current affairs affecting the state.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and interact with study sponsors, state and community leaders and others to facilitate project planning and development of research methods, data collection processes and the delivery of research findings and implications.
  • Knowledge of state and federal statistical sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Centers for Disease control and Prevention.
  • Experience in assisting with grant writing and reporting.
