JOB TITLE: Peer Community Living Support Specialist
LOCATION: Charlevoix, MI
REPORTS TO: Center Supervisor
STATUS: Part-Time, Non-Union, Non-Exempt
HYBRID ELIGIBLE: Yes
STARTING WAGE RANGE: $15.23 - $15.99 per hour

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience: Individuals providing Peer Community Living Support Services must be able to demonstrate their experience in relationship to the types of guidance, support and mentoring activities they will provide. Individuals providing these services should be those generally recognized and accepted to be peers.
Other: Ability to facilitate group dialog and conversation and has some experience in public speaking and training. Must have ability to use basic computer skills. Ability to interact with physicians and other healthcare providers in a professional manner. Lived Experiences with behavioral health issues are valued and required.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Peer Community Living Support Specialist (P-CLS) employs unique background and skill level from personal experience in promoting services and supports to help clients achieve their personal goals of community membership, independence, and productivity. The P-CLS Specialist engages in a wide range of activities providing supports in the client’s residence or in community settings in accordance with goals, objectives and services outlined in the Plan of Service. The PCL Specialist is an integral part of the Peer Community Living Support Services team and participates in team, staff and in-service meetings delivering services to clients with serious mental illness or developmental disability.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Supports mentors, assists and partners with clients in order that they might achieve increased community inclusion, participation, independence, recovery, resiliency and/or productivity according to the Plan of Service.
  • Employs ability to gain trust and respect of clients based on shared experience and perspectives regarding disabilities. Shares recovery stories and/or advocacy involvement and initiative for the purpose of assisting recovery and self-advocacy.
  • Assists with developing and applying arrangements that support self-determination, development of Wellness Plans, Advance Directives, and learning about and pursuing alternatives to guardianship.
  • Serves as a role model to clients by assisting and supporting them in performing and maintaining their basic and advanced self-care skills in order to promote healthy adult role functioning. Activities include, but are not limited to money management, assisting with household chores, socialization and relationship building, transportation, participation in community activities, and shopping.
  • Provides supportive services during a crisis and non-medical care such as socialization and relationship building, facilitating leisure choices and participation in regular community activities, attending medical appointments (not simply transportation), and reminding, observing and/or monitoring of medication.
  • Participates with clients in a wide range of social, recreational and task-oriented activities to support improved functioning while maintaining appropriate therapeutic relationships.
  • Offers input for treatment planning, activities and provides individualized therapeutic experiences for each resident. Observes and reports any physical symptoms and reactions or changes in the mental condition of assigned consumer to Supports Coordinator or Supervisor immediately. Records the observations in progress notes/data sheets.
  • May provide services in local jails or arraignment courts. May provide jail diversion services at the pre-booking point, after individual has been booked and placed in jail, and to individuals who have been given a sentence.
  • Utilizes crisis intervention techniques and active listening skills to assist clients in achieving stabilization and adjustment to the community.
  • Attends and participates in team, staff and in-service trainings.
  • Collects pertinent data, records and communicates observations to team members.
  • May assist in facilitating recovery-oriented groups.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to walk, bend, stand, sit, lift to 50 pounds with or without assistance, stretch/reach, hear, see, hand/finger dexterity and drive a vehicle. Position requires physical ability to complete and maintain certification in CPI techniques which will be a training class provided to the job incumbent. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions in accordance with applicable laws.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the MDHHS Peer Support certification or be in the process of certification within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Must be current in Adult CPR and First Aid; provided by NCCMH.
  • Complete initial training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI); provided by NCCMH.
  • Have own phone for communication and reliable access to messages.
  • Have reliable transportation in carrying out agency duties.
  • Possess a valid Michigan’s driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to work within guidelines of the code of conduct, regulatory compliance plan and personnel policies.
  • Supports a philosophy of service delivery that is recovery-based, person centered and culturally competent.
  • Adhere to applicable policies and procedures as required by the Department of Community Mental Health, the Mental Health Services Board, and other pertinent regulatory agencies.
  • Well-organized and self-directed, with the ability to manage time in an efficient manner to meet deadlines and accomplish work in order of priority with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Possesses high ethical standards, trustworthiness, and is a person of integrity.
  • Maintains appropriate professional image; able to maintain composure and effectiveness under pressure and in changing conditions; able to accept feedback as it relates to job performance and responsibilities.
  • Possess good judgment and problem solving with ability to identify, analyze, and resolve problems in a timely manner
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; public speaking and meeting facilitation.
