North Charleston Fire Department is Hiring a Fire Apparatus and Supply Technician Near Charleston, SC

Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to provide logistical support for the Fire Department by transporting fire apparatus and other vehicles to necessary locations. Ensure supplies and materials are available when needed. Provide assistance as required. This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Essential Functions

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Deliver Station Supplies and Fire Apparatus, and other department vehicles to requested locations.
  • Monitor the status of repairs of equipment and vehicles.
  • Repair minor facility defects.
  • Repair minor vehicle defects that includes changing bulbs, and replacing and repairing missing or broken parts.
  • Repair and test SCBA equipment.
  • Conduct annual SCBA fit testing.
  • Size, deliver and/or fix firefighting gear and uniforms.
  • May be designated to report to work during hazardous weather or emergency conditions.
  • Performs related work as may be required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the City as they pertain to the performance of duties of the position and fire service terminology.
  • Knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of the City and other governmental agencies, the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Ability to understand concepts and principles of business procedures.
  • Mechanical ability to perform minor equipment maintenance on apparatus and other equipment in the fire department.
  • Ability to read and understand Excel formula calculations.
  • Ability to organize station supplies and order items as may be required.
  • Excellent communication skill with others using technical and nontechnical language to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as may be required
  • Skill in planning, organizing and prioritizing daily assignments and work activities.
  • Maintain and use a variety of office equipment.
  • Ability to read, interpret and analyze complex materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
  • Assemble information, make written reports and records in a concise, clear and effective manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for communicating with various departments and stations.
  • Operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks. Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent and one (1) year of experience in minor equipment or vehicle repair, supply and inventory control. Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

  • bright/dim light; dusts and pollen
  • extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions
  • extreme noise levels; animals/wildlife;
  • vibration; fumes and/or noxious odors;
  • traffic; moving machinery;
  • electrical shock; heights.

Special Certifications and Licenses

  • Valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with Class “E” designation obtained within 18 months of hire date; and
  • Requires Emergency Vehicle Driver’s Training

Standard Clauses

This position may be required to be on call during emergency disasters and subject to 24-hour shifts or other emergency schedule that is necessary to meet the City’s needs.

Pay: $57,760.00 - $88,155.00 per year
