In Student Leadership and Engagement, we facilitate purposeful involvement and leadership development that supports and enhances students’ academic experience. We engage students in meaningful and memorable involvement experiences that create a sense of belonging, and we equip them with the knowledge, tools, and experiences to practice socially responsible leadership and contribute to a global society. Student Leadership and Engagement, serving the entire student body, provides leadership and vision for coordinating various forms of student involvement and engagement within DASA at NC State University.
The department encompasses co-curricular leadership programs and initiatives; student organization management; education, and development; student governance; large scale campus programming; global engagement via Alternative Service Break, service and civic engagement coordination; Gallup Strengths training and coaching; campus-community partnerships; oversight of the Feed the Pack Food Pantry; three academic courses; and a robust student intern program.
Essential Job Duties
The Assistant Director will be responsible for the following:
  • Serve as the primary advisor for Student Government including elected student body officers
  • Serve as the primary advisor for Executive Branch, Legislative Branch and Board of Elections, and Treasury
  • Supervise graduate assistant for Student Government (20 hour assistantship)
  • Manage budgets totaling over $420,000 in student fees, ensuring proper expenditures of allocated funds
  • Ensure Student Government (SG) is compliance with NC State University policies, rules, and regulations as well as relevant federal and state laws
  • Guide SG student organization appropriations process
  • Coordinate and support implementation of co-curricular programs, activities and retreats including training and workshops
  • Co-create Student Government leadership training and development activities in consultation with student body officers and student leaders
  • Advise student leaders on policy, procedures and organizational development
  • Maintain documentation and develop institutional memory to promote organization sustainability and mission continuity
  • Develop sustainability and development plan for long-term organizational health
  • Risk management assessment, mitigation, prevention of SG events and initiatives
  • Review and learn technology-based tools for Student Government including Campus LabsEngage
  • Establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with multiple constituents including campus offices, students, staff, faculty members and various other community groups
  • Manage space operations and procedures for SG suite
  • Advise and mentor SG leaders at varied levels of development and experience

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Education, Leadership, Organizational Development, Higher Education, or related field
  • 2 Years of Experience in Higher Education or related field
Other Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience with leadership training and development
  • Advising student leaders within a student organization
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated effort to promote inclusion and belonging among staff and students throughout the university
  • Effective leadership skills, with the ability to coach, advise, supervise, train and mentor
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Have previous experience advising student government, programming boards, residence hall associations, or other student council organizations
