Primary Purpose of Position:

Hands on technical work with supervisory and administrative work in the management of routine construction, maintenance, and repair operations at a various sized facilities, buildings and structures, and automotive repair at Hanging Rock State Park.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Inspects park facilities and buildings for maintenance and safety hazards.
  • Performs a variety of skilled tasks in a trade such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC and facility maintenance, and auto mechanics.
  • Operates large and small equipment and works with all small and large tools.
  • Supervises, plans, reviews and evaluates the work of temporary and permanent employees, community service participants and volunteers on special projects.
  • Develops and adjusts the short-term assignments, schedules and priorities.
  • Participates in the maintenance, repair and minor renovation work to buildings, equipment, and utility systems.
  • Maintains stock control procedures for tools, parts, and supplies, and advises management concerning the technical aspects of maintaining, replacing or renovating equipment and facilities.
  • Draws and reads blueprints/structural specifications plans for minor renovations and repairs, cost estimating of repairs and other projects.
  • Operates water and/or waste water treatment plants.
  • Participates in facility master planning, outside bid package development and implementation, reviews and comments on plan sheets from outside designers and contractors, monitors and inspects contractor construction and renovation projects.
  • Serves as liaison to local officials and/or regulatory agencies, and participates in the overall management and policy making for the facility/agency.
  • Provides record keeping tasks such as recording work hours, performance, and basic operational forms.
  • Assists in housekeeping, grounds and/or vehicle maintenance.
Position Requirements:
  • Must be available to work evenings, holidays, and weekends when necessary.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid class A-Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to drive various classes of vehicles and tractors.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license within 30 days of employment
  • Performs work inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Physical strength to move relatively heavy objects (up to 90 pounds) and to work at heavy manual tasks for considerable periods of time.
  • Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Within 12-24 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain :
  • Class A CDL
  • CPR Certification
  • Emergency Medical Responder Certification
  • Wild Land Fire Suppression Certifications
  • Division Sponsored Chainsaw Operator
  • C-Well Certification
  • Subsurface Wastewater Treatment Certification

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and work experience performing trades in at least three of the following: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and/or auto mechanics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience using the methods and practices of construction, maintenance and repair of buildings, machinery, and grounds maintenance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience using NC building codes and all other rules and regulations governing repair, maintenance, and construction of facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience reading and drawing blueprints/structural specifications and estimating material.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

AND

three (3) years of progressive experience in facility maintenance or construction including journey level experience in at least three (3) building or mechanical trades;

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications
May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.

Park Information:

Hanging Rock State Park
Located in Stokes County 30 miles north of Winston-Salem, Hanging Rock State Park started as a Civilian Conservation Corps project and has become a park that offers every part of a traditional outdoor experience. Trails lead to picturesque mountain views, rock outcrops, waterfalls, and even a mountain cave. Some are open to horseback riding and mountain biking, and a portion is part of the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail. Campgrounds, a swim lake and access to paddling on the Dan River complete the gamut of recreational opportunities.
