We are currently recruiting for a Psychologist on our Child and Adolescent Unit at Central Regional Hospital (CRH).
The psychologist provides a range of psychological and behavioral assessment services to child and adolescent patients with severe and persistent mental illness, severe behavior disorders, and co-occurring disorders such as developmental disorders, substance abuse, and neurocognitive disorders, in coordination with interdisciplinary treatment teams. Primary emphasis is on providing age and need-appropriate evidence-based behavioral assessment and interventions as well as cognitive and adaptive assessments for use by the interdisciplinary treatment team to enhance case conceptualization and treatment planning. Job duties include but are not limited to:
  • Participation in the interdisciplinary treatment planning process and provides evidence-based individual and group behavioral therapy and skills training.
  • Provide psychologically and behaviorally oriented training and consultation to unit staff and provides consultation to schools, other human service agencies, and health care facilities.
  • As a member of the Psychology Department, the psychologist will have access to continuing education opportunities such as Grand Rounds and participation in specialized committees or work groups.
  • Lastly, as the Psychology Department offers an APA accredited internship program, the psychologist contributes to training and supervision of practicum and internship graduate students in clinical and school psychology.
The normal work hours for this position is 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday however flexibility is required to meet hospital needs. This is a full-time position and eligible for the full State benefits package including health insurance and retirement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified candidates must document on the application that they clearly possess all of the following:

  • Ability to complete behavioral assessment with severely and persistently mentally ill children and adolescent patients within the Child and Adolescent Unit (CAU), including preference and reinforcer assessments and the functional analysis of conditions maintaining problem behavior including the ability to conduct visual observations and visually inspect and analyze graphed data.
  • Ability to provide psychological treatment including individual and group behavior therapy, techniques for increasing adaptive behavior such as shaping, differential reinforcement of behavior, modeling, and behavioral skills training, and in techniques for reducing problem behavior via contingency management with severely and persistently mentally ill child and adolescent patients within the CAU.
  • Knowledge of community resources, institutional policies/procedures, and state law regarding psychological treatment.
  • Knowledge of the theories and practices of the field of psychology including behavior analysis and other learning theories, the social learning model, biological bases of behavior and human development (normal and psychopathological).
  • Ability to communicate with patients across a wide range of developmental phases and cognitive abilities.
  • Ability to engage patients and their caretakers in the development of age-appropriate treatment plans and the ability to adapt them to the cognitive and physical skills and limitations of impaired children and adolescents.
  • Ability to translate knowledge and information about ethnic and cultural backgrounds into treatment interventions. This includes the consideration of cultural norms and values in assessments, treatment, and training.
  • Leadership ability that promotes mutual respect and problem-solving among all disciplines and demonstrates a commitment to high quality care.
Management Preferences:
  • Master’s/specialist degree in psychology from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Experience or training working with children and adolescents with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Eligibility for licensure in North Carolina under the provisions of the NC Psychology Practice Act (G.S. 90-270).

**Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus
Qualified applicants must be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time employee who works 30 to 40 hours per week is eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week).
An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:
