Description of Work

Reporting to a Correctional Programs Supervisor, this position is responsible for conducting initial assessments of offender needs and developing case plans, monitoring for compliance and results, and revising as appropriate to meet offender needs and achieve system objectives. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assessing offender behavior and developing counseling strategies to achieve desired offender progress.

Answering offender questions, giving information about classification and sentencing status, corresponding with offender families, and providing supportive counseling.

Organizing and directing the activities of various rehabilitation programs provided for offenders.

Conducting work release and home leave investigations, coordinating community resources, planning and coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.

Making recommendations to the offender classification committees on an offenders’ program involvement or custody level change.

Working with offenders whose problems, needs, and comprehension levels, vary greatly.

Working in all sections of a Close, Medium, and Minimum Custody prison facility, which places them in constant contact with offenders.

Serving in a custody role during certain activities and working some evening hours, weekends, and holidays.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

About the NC Dept. of Adult Correction (DAC):

The Department of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff, as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

Scotland Correctional Institution is located in Laurinburg, North Carolina and houses up to 1,800 male offenders in a close, medium, and minimum custody facility.

Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution

Or

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction

Or

An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

This is in addition to submitting fingerprints during the application process.
