North Carolina Central University is Hiring an Environmental technician Near Durham, NC

The Grounds Department reports directly to the Associate Vice-Chancellor for Facilities Management and is responsible for providing grounds services throughout NCCU campus.

Primary Purpose of Position

Position serves as a working crew leader providing daily hands on supervision of crew in carrying out routine and non-routine landscape or other tasks.

Tasks include but not limited to the application of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides; tree and shrub pruning; maintenance of flowering plants, shrubs and trees;

mowing large turf areas; and the operation of tools, equipment and other machinery used in landscaping, grounds maintenance and snow removal.

The primary purpose of this position is to mow and trim turf grass; prune of trees and shrubs; planting of trees, shrubs, and flowers;

weeding, cultivating and mulching plant beds; spraying herbicides; leaf removal; snow and ice removal from the University roads and walkways.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • The successful candidate must possess a working knowledge of grounds keeping and horticultural practices; knowledge of cultivation, pruning, spraying and trimming requirements for trees and shrubs;
  • ability to perform heavy to medium physical work; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form;
  • ability to multi-task in addition to bending and stooping frequently; ability to work independently and to take initiative and follow through until completion or resolution of assignments;

ability to exercise judgment and discretion in problem solving; ability to perform basic computer skills; ability to follow written instruction.

  • knowledge and experience of grounds maintenance tasks including application of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides;
  • be skilled in the operation of large grounds maintenance equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral and written work assignments;
  • ability to supervise and delegate responsibilities to assigned employees to get assignments completed; experience in planting, cultivation and care of shrubs, trees, plants and turf of this region;

have a valid NC Commercial Drivers License and a valid NC Pesticide Applicators License

Minimum Education / Experience

Special certification may be required for some of these positions.
