Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Office of the Provost is responsible for all matters pertaining to academic programs. This includes oversight of academic program planning, the quality and delivery of instruction, strategic budgetary planning and collaborative research initiatives. The Office of the Provost is also responsible for all recruitment initiatives and matters associated with enrollment management. Additionally, this office fosters opportunities for student success through academic advising, coaching, and mentoring.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to provide support to help undergraduate students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to success in college. The Academic Success Tutor works to identify barriers to student learning and promote academic skill building, positive study habits, and targeted success interventions to students that have traditionally been at risk for attrition.
For each student seeking assistance, the Academic Success Tutor oversees student learning activities to reinforce the skills and strategies proven to help students become independent and active learners, while providing content specific support. This person develops, organizes, updates, and maintains relevant study materials, and coordinates learning initiatives with the University College team, faculty across disciplines, and other relevant campus partners.
Strategically, this position will continue to lead in the development and facilitation of related initiatives and programming that assist in increasing positive outcomes aligned with student success for students.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The successful candidate for the Coordinator of Academic Success Coaching position must:
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Possess superior organizational skills;
  • Demonstrate an ability to keep accurate and consistent records;
  • Possess knowledge of instructional practices, and student success models;
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with diverse learners to ensure their success;
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently, and with team members call and possess the ability to effectively evaluate student outcomes and staff;
  • Demonstrate an ability to utilize technology;
  • Demonstrate the ability to gather and interpret data, and prepare report;
  • Possess knowledge of first and second-year students, and transfer students.
Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required; master’s degree, preferable in Education (or related field) desired

  • Collaborates with the Coordinator of Academic Success Coaching to establish and track programmatic metrics and outcomes;
  • Provides Academic Success Tutoring for an assigned caseload of students deemed at-risk based on institutional metrics and established priorities; Supports drop-in student needs;
  • Collaborates with faculty, academic advisors, and course coordinators to identify specific student academic and study skills issues;
  • Designs and implements individualized student development activities on a case-by-case basis to help students achieve academic improvement consistent with their goals, values, interests, and abilities.

  • Maintains expert knowledge in one or more academic area deemed critical to student matriculation (Math, English, Science, etc.);
  • Assists students with understanding their degree requirements, campus resources, academic policies and procedures such as the academic calendar, course withdrawals, attendance, and assists with student’s progression to good academic standing;
  • Provides workshops and trainings to assist students in the development of study skills, time management, and test-taking tools to aid their academic development

  • Maintains accurate documentation of success tutoring interactions and outreach in accordance with expectations established by University College;
  • Utilizes a proactive and intrusive approach to outreach to students on caseload;
  • Assists students with academic support and learning needs, including reviewing coursework requirements as listed in the syllabus and setting success plans to facilitate unsatisfactory academic progress.

  • Refers students to the appropriate campus resource or personnel and support resources and collaborates accordingly to monitor the academic progress and holistic development of referred students;
  • Participates in campus programming and partners with other units on campus in developing and implementing effective learning strategies for at-risk students.
