Title: Specimen Processing Summer Intern (2 openings)

There are 2 shifts. Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm and Tuesday through Saturday 9:30 am to 6:00 pm. The assignment runs from May to August 2024.

Summary

This position is designed to introduce and expose the student pursuing a college degree in healthcare or natural science to the clinical and forensic commercial laboratory. This introduction and exposure will be accomplished by teaching the candidate to perform tasks in the pre-analytical departments of a laboratory that are integral to day-to-day operations.

Education and Experience

·High School Diploma

Major Duties and Responsibilities

ŸHandle biological specimens.

ŸReceive, unpack, and sort specimens sent to NMS, including maintaining & reconciling courier airbill reports.

ŸComplete chain of custody documentation and complete other required documents

ŸResponsible for specimen inventory management, including transporting, retrieving, storage, and disposition or return of specimens in associated software programs.

ŸSort and Scan client requisitions (On Base), store the paperwork and document discard date of storages.

ŸEnter patient information into the NMS Laboratory Information Management system (LIMS)

ŸAssign test codes and clarify requests as needed.

ŸProcess specimens for referral to another laboratory

ŸFollow proper lab safety practices.

ŸPerforms general department housekeeping.

ŸParticipates in departmental meetings and projects.

ŸMaintains regular and reliable attendance.

ŸOther duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

·Ability to talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to manipulate computer keyboard, objects, or controls.

·Requires walking from one work location to another throughout the shift.

·Sitting and standing for up to extended periods of time.

·Lifting and carrying objects up to 20 pounds

Ÿ Specific vision abilities (with correction) include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

·Exposure to intermittent or constant sounds generated by equipment.

·Exposure to fumes, noxious odors, and dust

·Handling of biological material and blood-borne pathogens
