Job Description

The ideal Mechanical Engineering candidate will know how to get 10 lbs of stuff into a 5 lb camera system while meeting precision opto-mechanical tolerances. The Mechanical Engineer will develop the mechanical design, including structural analysis, for a new 3D imaging product for nLIGHT. Effort will also include environmental requirements such as shock, vibration, temperature stability, and IP rating. The Mechanical Engineer will also play a key role in the camera team in the system architecture definition, identification of ergonomic factors and industrial design, and working with outside vendors for fabrication. Experience in high precision and optical systems will be an important part of the Engineer’s toolkit.

Responsibilities

  • Working with other mechanical engineers, drive camera mechanical design. This work includes integrating input from specialists such as thermal analysis consultants to create a camera design that is robust, cost-effective, and good ergonomics.
  • Participating, and leading in some areas, system architecture definition, define design requirements, and design approaches.
  • In addition to the internal mechanical engineering design responsibilities, the Engineer will be the primary interface with external partners and contractors that may also be involved to achieve design and manufacturing goals.
  • Performing structural and other analysis, both hand calculations and computer simulations, to show design will meet requirements. Performing verification tests as appropriate to validate model and design approach.
  • Ensuring design meets any relevant industry performance or design standards. Follow corporate engineering standards and best practices.
  • As appropriate, lead or participate in design reviews and cross-discipline engineering panels.
  • Work with partners and sub-contractors (including industrial designers) to deliver a final design that meets performance specifications and cost targets, industrial design goals, and is manufacturable in volume.
  • Responsible for the mechanical design of test fixtures and manufacturing jigs, and fixtures that will be used in development and manufacturing as well as performing the testing and verifying that the design meets the product requirements

Qualifications

  • Minimum BS Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience designing optical, imaging, or other precision systems.
  • Experience with mechanical design of handheld camera systems is a huge plus.
  • Must have understanding methodologies & approaches to high density packaging, including interconnects, thermal management, and stable structural solutions.
  • Strong skills with solid modeling CAD packages such as SolidWorks
  • Demonstrated understanding of mechanical design principles and best practices. Understanding of design standards such as ANSI and ISO and how to apply them.
  • Ability to use finite element analysis (FEA) software packages such as ANSYS and experience using such packages to meet precision structural tolerances.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate requirements into robust, practical solutions
  • Experience in commercial product development, including industrial environmental operating conditions (temperature, shock, and vibration)
  • Understanding of design for manufacturing (DFM) and how to achieve performance requirements within cost envelopes.
  • Excellent communications and enjoy working within an interdisciplinary team. Able to contribute to the company culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to work to demanding schedules and successfully achieve expected deliverables as well as document work well.
  • Some travel (<25%) is expected to support engineering builds and product bring-up at partner and customer locations.
