Job Title: Program Specialist
Status: Full Time Exempt, 40 hours per week

About the Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad, Inc.
A charitable nonprofit, the Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad operates popular Nickel Plate Express excursions on the 12.6 miles of the former Nickel Plate Road between Noblesville and Atlanta, IN. The operation is active on weekends from January - December and select weekdays. The Nickel Plate Express manages 2 EMD diesel locomotives, a 50-tonner switcher engine, 4 1956 Santa Fe Hi-Level passenger cars, and a 1957 caboose From May through October, Nickel Plate Express will operate a 30-passenger railbike program offering scheduled tours from Thursday- Sunday each week. Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad operates a small gift shop located inside Forest Park. In 2023, NPHR welcomed just over 23,000 visitors.
Responsibilities:
Event Set Up, Tear Down and Preparation (50%)
- Executing events as assigned by the director.
· Sourcing and procuring supplies for events as needed.
- Ensures train is properly set up and prepared for weekend events. This includes loading in beverages, light cleaning, and light food prep.
- Oversee events from set-up to close-out on scheduled days. Ensures train has all needed supplies, is properly set and reset for the following day.
Administrative and Customer Experience (50%)
- Answering phone calls and assisting customers with questions about events and tickets.
- Managing hours for the gift shop and walk in ticket purchases.
- Manages railbike check in, ticket sales and waivers.
- Assists in administrative duties with the board of directors including taking minutes, creating agendas and any other duties as needed.
Required Skills and Qualifications
· Strong organizational and communication skills.
· Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively.
· Passion for preserving and promoting the heritage of the railroad industry.
· Customer service experience.
· Knowledge of Microsoft Office products including word, excel and outlook.
- Must be at least 21 years of age and able to obtain a server’s license.
- Available to work weekends and have reliable transportation to and from work.
- Ability to navigate steps, walk up and down a moving train for shift duration and carry up to 25 pounds.
- At times this is a very physically demanding job. Large bags of ice, cases of alcohol, water and soda will be carried upstairs daily by this role.
Hours and Benefits
- The standard work week will run Tuesday – Saturday. Hours will be 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday hours will vary. Occasional evening hours will be required.
- This is a full-time, 40-hour salary position with the understanding that some weeks may require additional hours due to seasonal demands and fluctuations in the train schedule. Flexibility and occasional overtime may be necessary to accommodate varying workload demands and ensure operational efficiency.
