Description

Position Overview

The Nutrition Service Provider III will assist the Nutrition Service Team in completing daily requirements for food services per DPI/CACFP guidelines and follow guidelines from the Head Start Performance Standards. This position is primarily responsible for cooking, menu planning, special dietary needs and food substitutions. This position is a 12-month position.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

  • Follows established recipes while serving as the main cook.
  • Follows menu guidelines and adjusts when necessary due to an availability of menu items or for an individual child's needs.
  • Ability to independently make menu substitutions when necessary.
  • Understands and uses child nutritional needs and age-specific portion sizes to prepare meals in accordance with Head Start and CACFP guidelines.
  • Ensures that breakfast, lunch, and snack meals are prepared and delivered according to the daily scheduled time.
  • Ensures kitchen staff understands and strictly adheres to health, safety, food handling, and sanitation requirements before, during, and after meal preparation.
  • Assists in delivery of food to classrooms and removal of dirty dishes from classrooms as needed.
  • Assist with dishwashing as needed.
  • Be a team leader when primary manager is absent.
  • Works with agency staff to provide food catering for meetings and special events.
  • Assist with checking food deliveries for accuracy, safety, and quality.
  • Assist with putting away and storing food items once they are delivered.
  • Maintains appropriate cleanliness of all kitchen materials and supplies as required.
  • Responsible for daily, weekly and monthly cleaning and sanitizing of the kitchen and store room including but not limited to freezer, cooler, floors, walls, carts, equipment etc.
  • Creates a positive, harmonious, and professional atmosphere in the workplace.
  • Attend all mandatory trainings.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
  • Must be willing to continue education. Passing the ServSafe Manager certification within first six months of employment.
  • Must be dependable.
  • Must be willing and able to help with inventory and ordering of food products to coincide with prepared cycle menus.
  • Work with ChildPlus software to run allergy report and attendance reports.
  • Assist with menu substitution for children with allergies.
  • Responsibility for scaling recipes to cook each week based on attendance and allergy records.
  • Assist in completing food production records.
  • Supervise dish room activities.
  • Perform all other duties as requested and assigned by supervisor.

This must demonstrated by maintaining a positive work environment, and by behaving and communicating in an appropriate manner with children, families, coworkers, supervisors and the public while achieving performance expectations.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associates degree in related field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience working in a food service position with related duties.
  • Experience in preparing culturally diverse foods for groups.
  • ServSafe Food Manager Certification in the State of Wisconsin. If not certified at the time of hire, NDF will pay for necessary coursework within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability and desire to effectively work with low-income children and their families.
  • Professional demeanor.
  • Must possess current CPR certification at all times. If not certified at time of hire, NDF will provide training.
  • Must be willing to have a tuberculosis skin test at the time of hire and every 2 years thereafter.
  • Successfully pass a physical examination that verifies the employee is free from communicable disease and is physically able to perform required job responsibilities. Required every 2 years thereafter.
  • Successfully pass the Caregiver Background Check.

Special Position Requirements

  • Have a valid serve safe certification.
  • Have knowledge of FIFO.

Preferences

  • At least 5 years' experience cooking in a high volume, fast paced kitchen.

Physical Demands

  • Primarily active work; Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time and lift, hold, carry, place, push, pull or move up to 50 lbs.

Physical Activity

  • Bending, stooping, kneeling, sitting on the floor, walking/transporting, handling, reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, crouching, crawling, talking and speaking clearly, hearing conversation level, tasting, smelling and seeing and wiping, ability to interact daily with children outdoors in varied weather condition.

Work Environment

  • Mainly kitchen setting with delivery of food to classrooms.
  • Occasional off site travel, when needed to work at a different site.
  • Ability to tolerate frequent changes in temperature, hot/cold and wet/damp.
  • Ability to immerse hands in water for a prolonged period of time.

Personal/Physiological

  • Ability to make frequent, significant decisions to understand and react to the development process of children.
  • Ability to respond quickly and competently to an emergency or crisis situation in order to keep children safe.
