Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Phlebotomy Supervisor, coordinates daily phlebotomy activities of phlebotomists assigned to specific phlebotomy services such as inpatient services, on-site outpatient service centers, and nursing home services. The lead phlebotomist provides daily operational support, determines staffing requirements and adjusts assignments based on daily needs, and prepares staffing schedules at least one month in advance.

Working closely with the Phlebotomy Supervisor, is responsible for training of new hires, education of staff on new policies and procedures, and annual competency assessments. Participates in interview process of candidates for hire. Provides preliminary research and follow-up on problems. Communicates with staff to proactively identify problems and service needs.

Organizes, maintains and monitors department supplies to ensure adequate stock at all times.

Performs all support duties as assigned to phlebotomists in servicing inpatients, outpatients, nursing homes and other client sites located on and off the Newton-Wellesley Hospital campus. Responsibilities may vary depending on the site to which an individual is assigned. Assignments may change based on the needs of NWH customers.

Phlebotomists are responsible for sample collection on all patient populations as described in the Essential Functions below. The lead phlebotomist is expected to act as an example for phlebotomy staff in providing outstanding service and patient care in accordance with Newton-Wellesley Hospital CAREfirst standards.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Coordinate functions and activities of the phlebotomy staff. Establish daily work schedules. Maintain department schedules at least one month in advance.
  2. Communicate scheduling changes to staff and supervisor. Assess changing operational needs. Make suggestions relating to staffing and service needs to the Supervisor.
  3. With the Supervisor, provides oversight of staff to ensure compliance with established hospital and departmental policies, procedures and objectives, including all safety, environmental and infection control protocols.
  4. Perform preliminary investigation of problems and offers solutions to prevent or minimize recurrence.
  5. Assures adequate inventory of phlebotomy supplies. Establishes housekeeping procedures and policies.
  6. Participates in activities relating to customer satisfaction and organizational excellence. Acts as role model in the delivery of service and CAREfirst standards.
  7. Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on all age groups.
  8. Obtain other samples as ordered and defined by departmental procedure.
  9. Perform electrocardiograms as assigned.
  10. Identify all patients in accordance with hospital policy.
  11. Recognize the need for, and use specialized supplies and equipment, as appropriate.
  12. Process specimens in accordance with established protocols.
  13. Perform accurate data entry of patient demographics, insurance information and test orders into the computer system.
  14. Document the receipt of specimens into the computer system.
  15. Maintain required records, reports, statistics, files and logs.
  16. Participate in the Quality Improvement program and perform quality assurance checks to ensure accuracy of data entry.
  17. File requisitions appropriately according to established protocols.
  18. Rotate on weekends and holidays as assigned to ensure uniform quality of laboratory services.
  19. Maintain a safe clean work area.
  20. Alert supervisor to need for supplies and equipment.

  9. Adhere to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  10. Maintain competency in all areas of phlebotomy in accordance with the annual competency checklist.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Satisfactory physical environment with occasional distraction from instrument or related noise or exposure to unpleasant elements such as chemical fumes, dust or temperature variations.

Possible exposure to hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic agents, blood and body fluids. Also involves exposure to human waste and other unpleasant elements.

Working in a variety of patient care environments with possible exposure to communicable diseases.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and be able to demonstrate any knowledge or skills necessary to perform these duties.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

*High school education.

*Three years of experience in phlebotomy of all age groups.

*Demonstrated computer skills and customer service skills.

*The ability to work independent of supervision.

*Valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS OF JOB DESCRIPTION:

Constantly - 75% or more of the worker's time is spent in the activity

Occasionally - 5% to 25% or more of the worker's time is spent in this activity

Qualifications

High school education. Completion of a phlebotomy course is required. Three years of experience in phlebotomy of all age groups. Computer skills and customer service skills required. The ability to work independent of supervision. Reliable transportation and valid driver's license required. Must meet 25 wpm typing requirement.
