GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Phlebotomy Supervisor, coordinates daily phlebotomy activities of phlebotomists assigned to specific phlebotomy services such as inpatient services, on-site outpatient service centers, and nursing home services. The lead phlebotomist provides daily operational support, determines staffing requirements and adjusts assignments based on daily needs, and prepares staffing schedules at least one month in advance.
Working closely with the Phlebotomy Supervisor, is responsible for training of new hires, education of staff on new policies and procedures, and annual competency assessments. Participates in interview process of candidates for hire. Provides preliminary research and follow-up on problems. Communicates with staff to proactively identify problems and service needs.
Organizes, maintains and monitors department supplies to ensure adequate stock at all times.

Phlebotomists are responsible for sample collection on all patient populations as described in the Essential Functions below. The lead phlebotomist is expected to act as an example for phlebotomy staff in providing outstanding service and patient care in accordance with Newton-Wellesley Hospital CAREfirst standards.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Satisfactory physical environment with occasional distraction from instrument or related noise or exposure to unpleasant elements such as chemical fumes, dust or temperature variations.
Possible exposure to hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic agents, blood and body fluids. Also involves exposure to human waste and other unpleasant elements.
Working in a variety of patient care environments with possible exposure to communicable diseases.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and be able to demonstrate any knowledge or skills necessary to perform these duties.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
*High school education.
*Three years of experience in phlebotomy of all age groups.
*Demonstrated computer skills and customer service skills.
*The ability to work independent of supervision.
*Valid driver's license.

High school education. Completion of a phlebotomy course is required. Three years of experience in phlebotomy of all age groups. Computer skills and customer service skills required. The ability to work independent of supervision. Reliable transportation and valid driver's license required. Must meet 25 wpm typing requirement.
