Newmont operations in South America are trough two different companies, Newmont Peru SRL and Minera Yanacocha SRL.

Newmont Peru SRL was founded in 1983 as an exploration mining company whose main objective is obtain new gold reserves.

Minera Yanacoca SRL start their operations in 1992 in Cajamarca City partnership with Buenaventura, is the largest gold mine in South America.

Dimensions

Whilst this role has no direct reports it is expected to proactively influence and collaborate with personnel throughout the organisation to ensure regional leadership has the necessary information of sufficient quality to make informed investment decisions, while managing the development and improvement of key project analysis and value assessment tools and practices.

Purpose

  • The scope of this role covers all of the South American regional projects, and contributes to the effectiveness of these operations and projects specifically as it relates to investment valuation and decision making. 
  • This role has to work with and through many different managers to achieve maximum results. The quality of investment valuation and analysis for major projects in conjunction of project planning work throughout the company has a large impact on how much value can be extracted from investments around the region and globally. Further, it supports all strategic planning processes through the able integration of project advancement alternatives with the Strategic Planning process.
  • The role manages the process of valuation and assessment of investment decisions in line with the Global Investment System standards, while developing the analytical tools, implementing regional standards and practices, and engaging with the necessary stakeholders to improve South America’s approach to capital investment decisions. 
  • The role leads a disciplined enterprise risk management (ERM) process and a structured and consistent communication of risk assessment outcomes and action plans to mitigate risks.

Essential Duties

Investment Modeling and Strategic Planning

  • Investment Analysis Process.  Responsible for assisting major project teams with the construction of investment evaluation models while maintaining an objective point of view and leveraging knowledge of the business to thoroughly analyze and test input assumptions, conduct trend analysis for validity of assumptions, perform sensitivity analysis to investigate a range of possible outcomes and provide a recommendation to the investment teams regarding investment in a given project. 
  • Project Advancement and Options Analysis Process. Responsible for early and often engagement with major projects teams regarding project execution planning and options analysis to provide a “business” perspective that informs the options to be analyzed and ensures the RLT have sufficient information aligned with corporate standards to make a project advancement decision.
  • Options Assessment Definition Process. This role is expected to be heavily involved in Opportunity Framing Workshops for each major project to ensure the full breadth of “business” related options are assessed, thereby enabling better decision making at the point of investment. While not expected to influence the technical trade-off decision of a project, this role is responsible for ensuring the ‘bigger-picture’ options regarding size, timing, and structure of investments are considered.
  • Investment Evaluation Tool Management. Responsible for the development, continuous improvement, implementation and training associated with the Investment Evaluation Models as well as regional project analysis tools and processes in alignment with the Global Investment System standards and in association with the global Value Assurance team. This role is responsible for supporting and assessing the progress and development of each project’s economic case through closely collaboration with the site and project leadership teams.
  • Communication of Investment Alternatives. Develops clear and concise messaging in conjunction with the investment management regarding the assumptions used for any project valuation models, options analyzed, scenarios tested, impact of changing macroeconomic scenario pricing and other pertinent financial information required to make informed project advancement decisions. This role is responsible for simplifying complex analysis into readily-understandable and actionable information for RLT/ELT decision makers.

Investment Value and Management

  • Investment Center Process. Serves as a facilitator for the Regional Investment Council process, documents and communicates investment decisions and outcomes. 
  • Finance / Business Regional Value Assurance Subject Matter Expert. Responsible for reviewing, analyzing and providing a recommendation on investments submitted to the Regional or Corporate Investment Council that are justified based on financial returns

Enterprise Risk Management (ERM)

  • ERM Program. Facilitates the quarterly Regional Leadership Team (RLT) reviews of the ERM register.
  • ERM QA/QC. Ensures the risk register is up to date and mitigation actions are followed up on. This will require regular interaction with each of the Regional Leadership Team members to understand risks and develop action plans.

Training & Experience

  • Degree in Accounting, Engineering, Finance or related discipline
  • 10 years’ experience in a finance related position with significant mine site accounting experience preferred or in a related technical field (i.e. mine engineering, projects, etc.)
  • Understanding of the mining and processing value chains and mining projects;
  • Strong analytical and financial skills with the ability to review complex financial models for various projects where, at times, limited details are available;
  • Knowledge of financial reporting, accounting, budgeting, planning, and tax;
  • Knowledge of SAP’s BPC planning application is beneficial but not required
  • Experience influencing a team in a fast paced planning environment
  • Strong leadership and decision making skills
  • Good oral and written communication skills in order to effectively convey implications of business evaluation and decisions.
  • Strong organization and planning skills, work with little supervision
  • Proactive work ethic with strong analytical skills and a high level of accuracy
  • Works effectively in a cross-organizational and cross-cultural environment;
  • Spanish, Dutch and Sranan Tongo skills are desired but not required.

Working Conditions

  • The position is located in the regional headquarters in Miami, Florida. The role requires international travel to the Peru, Suriname and other South American locations to maintain the service level and to facilitate a strong relationship with site leadership team. Domestic travel to the Corporate headquarters in Denver may be required. 
  • The role may require significant work outside of normal office hours to meet major project timeframes.
