JOB SUMMARY:

Ensure recruitment of migrant students in the Newberg School District. Assist District staff in providing educational programs for migrant children to facilitate skill acquisition in academics, language, social, self-help, and motor areas. Maintain educational and attendance records, provide liaison services with parents, and provide for personal needs of the children served.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Requires fluency in Spanish and excellent communication skills with speakers of both English and Spanish. Understanding of the experiences, working and living conditions, language and culture of the migrant society. Ability to work with a diverse population of students and parents; ability to represent the program to the migrant students and parents; maintain accurate records; be an advocate for the student in the home and school settings; able to communicate orally and in writing in both Spanish and English and build relationships with students, parents, and staff. Must possess a valid Oregon Driver's License and automobile insurance in order to provide own transportation. Possess basic computer literacy skills.

Experience: Prior work with students in an educational setting; work within the Latino community.

Education: Two years post-secondary study, or an associate’s or higher degree.

Certification Required: Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Identify migrant students and complete appropriate documents for
  2. Work with teachers, principals, students, and patrons to support student learning in the classroom
  3. Assist in retaining migrant students in school and improve their graduation rates.
  4. Translate in oral and written communication district documents, letters, and instructional needs to parents, students, and patrons of the Newberg School District.
  5. Provide interpreter services for staff, students and families.
  6. Assist with collection of data to be recorded in migrant student profiles and Migrant Student Record Transfer System (MSRTS).
  7. Maintain confidentiality of students and programs.
  8. Collect and maintain all necessary student and program data as required by Migrant Education Student Service Center (MESC).
  9. Work in partnership with ELD staff to enhance communication and maximize services to students and families.
  10. Support organization and facilitation of Hispanic Parent Club meetings.
  11. Arrange for meeting school supply, clothing, and other needs of students through school and community resources as needed.
  12. Encourage target group parents to visit school and participate in school sponsored activities.
  13. Coordinate as necessary with community services, e., library, hospital/medical, juvenile court, and social services.
  14. Make periodic home visits to ensure ongoing communication.
  15. Liaison with low income housing agencies.
  16. Provide mediation, problem solving and conflict resolution to individuals and small groups when necessary.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Language Skills:

Ability to read English and Spanish and comprehend curriculum materials through grade 12. Ability to write clear and concise communications in English and Spanish.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with a high degree of accuracy.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed, but basic, written or oral instructions in English and Spanish. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co- workers, supervisor(s), staff, students, parents and community.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and may be continuously required to stand. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee may be required to sit at a desk and use a computer for long periods of time.

Works in a classroom environment in close proximity to students and other adults. May travel to student homes and agencies who support migrant families.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Works when School is in session. Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on the evaluation of Classified personnel.

CLASSIFICATION/LOCATION: Classified, Part-time position Districtwide/Welcome Center.

CALENDAR: 4 hours per day when school is in session, 188-day contract.

SALARY/BENEFITS:

Salary Range 10 of the Classified Wage Schedule Salary $19.29 - $23.71 per the 2023-24 Classified wage scale).
