JOB SUMMARY:

Perform instructional assistance to students with academic needs or behavioral changes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge: General knowledge in all content areas. Ability to understand oral and written directions; demonstrated skills in math, English, communication, and organization; ability to maintain a harmonious relationship with district employees and parents; promote the success of education and behavioral programs; adaptability to a variety of classroom situations; able to maintain a high level of confidentiality both in and out of the school setting. Flexible and willing to do a variety of jobs to meet deadlines and complete all required training. Ability to communicate with Spanish speaking students and adults preferred.

Experience: Previous experience with at risk youth preferred.

Education: Two years of college, associate's degree or passing score on a paraprofessional exam in reading, writing and math as required by federal law.

Certification Required: Medic First Aid Card.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Under the direction of the teacher or principal, manage and instruct individual/small groups in the academic areas.
  2. Assist in implementation of behavioral programs.
  3. Perform general clerical activities such as typing, filing, and copying.
  4. Supervise students with work assigned by the classroom teachers.
  5. Organize, prepare, adapt, and distribute instructional and resource materials.
  6. Collect, record, and maintain academic and behavioral data.
  7. Operate computer and other instructional equipment as required.
  8. Assist with implementing individualized education programs/contracts.
  9. Assist in reviewing, updating, implementing, and evaluating instructional programs.
  10. Assist in communicating informally with building staff, special education staff, agencies, parents and visitors.
  11. Assist with playground, cafeteria, bus duties, if applicable to the building situation.
  12. Make referrals to qualified personnel when appropriate.
  13. Assist with physical management of students as needed. 
  14. Assist students with study skills.
  15. Cultivate and model a respectful working and learning environment.
  16. Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English, Spanish, or other languages related to the job.
  17. Ability to work harmoniously with others.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB_REOUIREMENTS:

Language Skills:

Ability to read English and comprehend curriculum materials through grade 12. Ability to write clear and concise communications in English.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with a high degree of accuracy. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations in Algebra and Geometry for students in grades 9 through 12.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed, but basic, written or oral instructions in English. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor(s), staff, students, parents and community.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and may be continuously required to stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee may be required to sit at a desk and use a computer for long periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Works in a classroom environment in close proximity to students and other adults. May encounter students with emotional problems or hostile attitudes. Able to use a telephone, operate a computer, and use other office equipment. Able to drive to other program sites and meetings.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Works when school is in session. Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on the evaluation of Classified personnel.

LASSIFICATION/LOCATION: Classified, Part-time position Edwards Elementary

CALENDAR: 7.5 hours per day when school is in session, 185-day contract.

SALARY/BENEFITS:

Salary Range 9 of the Classified Wage Schedule Salary $18.55-$22.80 per hour
