    ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

    The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Assistant Superintendent .

    Newark Board of Education is committed to ensuring exemplary leadership at every one of its schools. To achieve this goal, the Superintendent seeks an Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning to oversee, coordinate and supervise curriculum planning, implementation, and evaluation; program development and evaluation; career and vocational education; and all aspects of developing and evaluating special programs. Achieving excellence requires that the Assistant Superintendent works collaboratively to lead and nurture members of the staff, and communicates effectively with parents, members of the community, and colleagues in other districts and schools. This is an exciting opportunity for leaders with the right skills and experiences to have a lasting impact on all of Newark Board of Education' students and their schools.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
    1. Master's degree in Education or related field required; Ed. D preferred.
    2. A minimum of ten (10) years of professional experience, with an outstanding track record as a school Principal (or equivalent) strongly (preferred.
    3. Significant experience as an instructional leader elevating student achievement in an urban setting.
    4. Demonstrated ability to improve student achievement all levels.
    5. School Administrator Certificate/Certificate of Eligibility (CE).
    6. Successful administrative experience, particularly in the field of curriculum leadership and related areas of staff development, group facilitation, and planning.
    7. High level of written and oral communication with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and ability to resolve issues related to areas of responsibility.
    8. Experience in promoting a positive learning culture; thorough knowledge of and practical experience with concepts and principles of curriculum design, development, and evaluation.
    9. Knowledge of practical application of adult learning principles; practical experiences with evaluation, assessment, accountability, and school improvement planning including interventions for students and schools.
    10. Ability to develop and successfully carry out implementation plans with a proven record of developing and motivating staff.
    BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning's responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

    • Overarching Responsibilities of the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning:
      • Assist in identifying, recruiting and promoting excellent teachers and other school-based staff.
      • Assist in the development, implementation, coordination, evaluation and assessment of the educational programs.
      • Assist in the development and periodic review of curriculum, establishing the means to provide a comprehensive integrated curriculum.
      • Guide the development, revision, and implementation of K-12 vertical curriculum in all subject areas including alignment to resources, assessment recommendations, suggested teaching strategies, and classroom activities, and assures that curricula are aligned to national and state standards.
      • Guide school leaders in the development of school curriculum, facilitates collaboration among school sites, and supervises the work of curriculum consultants and team members in order to formulate action plans and modify programs and procedures to improve District efforts.
      • Provide school leaders the tools, support, and training needed to refine and articulate the overall instructional strategies for schools, including attention to different learning styles, different student cultural backgrounds, low ability readers, English language learners, and students with advanced capabilities.
      • Respond professionally to common inquiries or complaints from all stakeholders on a variety of curriculum, instruction, and assessment topics.
      • Supervision and evaluation of Directors and Supervisors.
      • Provide professional development for Directors and Supervisors that is aligned to the mission and vision of the school district as well as leveraged by data points necessary to impact student learning outcomes.
      • Assist in the provision of data and the preparation of district and school improvement plans.
      • Coordinate the planning, implementation and evaluation of grade level and subject area meetings.
      • Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of a program of reporting to parents on the educational progress of children.
      • Assist in the selection and purchase of instructional materials, equipment, textbooks and similar items.
      • Assist in the preparation of the instructional program budget recommendations and administration of the instructional program budget.
      • Coordinate educational programs and student teacher placements for colleges and universities.
      • Coordinate planning and development of academy, magnet, and other innovative programs by curriculum Directors, Supervisors, and Teachers.
      • Serve as the Superintendent's lead for the Programs and Instruction sub-committee of the Newark Board of Education.
      • Any other items as directed by the Superintendent and/or Deputy Superintendent of Schools.
    • Coach District-Level Directors and Supervisors:
    • Work with Directors and Supervisors to establish specific, targeted student performance goals and create plans implementation for curriculum, assessment, instructional practice, and professional development.
    • Provide them with the support and resources they need to create cultures of high expectations and systems as they provide supports to elementary and high schools across the District.
    • Work with Directors and Supervisors to ensure a clear division of labor on their core leadership team to ensure their time is free to drive vision and results.
    • Support Principals in day-to-day leadership to drive results, including:
    • Conduct regular formal and informal classroom walk-throughs aligned to student achievement and strategic goals alongside the Assistant Superintendents of the School Leadership Teams.
    • Provide feedback to principals around successful leadership practices and use of data to leverage academic achievement across content areas.
    • Focus Principals on student outcomes and teacher quality while circling back to the curricula expectations as outlined by the Superintendent of Schools.

    SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION

    1. Salary Range: Commensurate with background, experience, and education.
    2. Employment Period: Twelve (12) Months (i.e., Year-Round Role)
