The School of Architecture and Design at New York Tech invites applications for the position of Digital Fabrication Lab Coordinator. We are seeking a highly motivated coordinator with a strong interest in education and excellent organizational and technical skills. Particularly preferred will be the expertise with digital technologies, advanced equipment, tools, and professional design experience. 

Responsibilities

  • Based at NYIT’s New York City campus, the Digital FabLab Coordinator will report to the Director of Digital Technologies and Fabrication and oversee the day-to-day operations of integrated analog and state-of-the-art digital fabrication facilities in Long Island and NYC. 
  • Partner and support SoAD faculty and students, work with administrators and assist in managing usage, installing, maintaining, programming and continually upgrading equipment and machines.
  • Maintain effective access and safety protocols. Administration of safety procedures and in alignment with other NYIT policies including the implementation of Operation Procedures (OP) and Machine Safety Operating Procedures (SOP)
  • Manage online queue of student 3D printing and Laser cutting submissions.
  • Organize equipment use demonstrations and orientations for students and faculty.
  • Assist with technology budgets and reports in addition to fabrication lab policies, procedures, tutorials, and purchases.
  • Train and supervise student projects, faculty, and student workers, in the interest of advancing a culture of experimental making and hands-on research.
  • Researching and experimenting with the capabilities of traditional wood shop tools, digital tools, and various other methods

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a degree in Architecture or a related field.

Experience

  • A minimum of 1-3 years of fabrication experience in an academic and/or professional setting.
  • Strong digital design skills and experience with CAD/CAM programming; Rhino 3D, Autocad, Adobe Suite
  • Ability to creatively integrate traditional analog fabrication methods with emerging digital techniques.
  • Experience operating two or more of the following digital fabrication systems: 3D printers, CNC milling machines, laser cutting, vacuum forming, wood shop equipment.
  • Experience using, installing, and maintaining software for 3D modeling, CNC, and/or Arduino systems is also preferred.Ability to assist students working on interdisciplinary projects from concept to fabrication.

The position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, a great attitude, collegiality in teamwork, 20/20 vision (naturally or with correction), and the ability to lift heavy equipment and materials. A flexible work schedule may include nights and weekends.
