Job Title: Director of Security
Department: Operations- Risk & Safety Team
Job Region: Store Support – Portland
Reports-To: Sr. Director of Governance, Risk and Safety Team
Exemption Status (typically): Exempt
Requirements: As a retail grocer, we operate 7 days/week and 365 days/year and as such work in support of our stores may include evening and weekend hours per the needs of the business. Valid Driver License and vehicle required, with ability to travel regularly to store locations, trade shows / events and/or other off-site locations throughout Portland Metro / Vancouver region. Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Unarmed Private Security Professional Certification required Unarmed Private Security Instructor Certification required. Firearms Instructor preferred.

About the role:  As a member of the Risk & Safety Team, the Director of Security manages and leads an integrated and dynamic security and loss prevention program that effectively leverages internal and external security partners and technology. Responsible for the implementation of the Safety and Security policy and strategy in stores, and acts as a liaison between the Security Program Specialists, CSSS, Operations Teams, and Store Leadership Teams. Assists in creating a safe environment for staff, customers, and vendor partners through training, coaching, cross-functional collaboration, development of best practices, and direct support. This role is responsible for providing leadership in line with company values and promoting a positive and progressive work environment in alignment with our company mission, vision values and policies.

Required Permits and Licenses: Valid driver license and vehicle. Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Executive Manager License and Unarmed Private Security Instructor Certification required.

Position Specific Functions

  • Directly manages security program specialists.
  • Cross-functionally develop, implement and evolve security program and policies and strategic approach to foster a safe and inclusive work environment that deters disruptive behavior and is aligned with NSM values.
  • Builds and fosters a collaborative cross-company culture of safety and security through engaging Customer Service & Safety Specialists (CSSS), Operations and Store Leadership Teams with meaningful trainings, meetings, coaching, and regular updates/communications.
  • Defines, builds and develops the CSSS role to create an effective, internal professional security team that understands the unique nature of safety and security in a grocery store setting.
  • Develop, implement and train on workplace violence prevention strategies, including investigations and mitigation/intervention approaches
  • Provides leadership and oversight of company safety and security strategy; holds store leadership teams accountable for appropriate and proportional response to issues
  • Develop and deliver new hire and annual refresher security and safety trainings to Customer Service & Safety Specialists (CSSS), Operations staff, and Store Leadership teams covering NSM safety and security policies, including verbal de-escalation, defensive tactics, report writing, and loss prevention.
  • Develop, implement and maintain effective loss-prevention and security-related incident reporting that complies with all relevant compliance and regulatory requirements, supports prosecution where necessary, and serves as an effective tool across the organization to identify and track chronic offenders.
  • Partner with leaders across the organization to ensure policies and programs support a safe environment in our stores with an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusivity.
  • Identify, analyze and evaluates qualitative and quantitative key program metrics. Report on these metrics to stakeholders across the company.
  • Provides regular coaching and feedback and supports performance management as needed for CSSS & Operations teams in line with company security strategy. Conduct Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Unarmed Security Professional classes for Customer Service & Safety Specialists (CSSS) and ensure Customer Service & Safety Specialists (CSSS) staff maintain up-to-date required trainings and certifications.
  • Partner with stakeholders across the company to develop standards for the utilization of security technology; implement, train and utilize technology and equipment tomaintain and support a safe environment (such as camera and security alarm systems, panic buttons and store access systems).
  • Manage external security vendor relationships, including drafting and enforcing post orders
  • Maintain and build relationships with key community stakeholders, including relevant organizations and law enforcement officials to align company efforts with community.
  • Tools and Equipment Used (not all inclusive): This position works with standard office equipment. May be required to use the following tools and equipment when working in stores or offsite; baler, hand truck, POS, industrial kitchen equipment (i.e. blast chiller, grill, knives/blades, oven, grills, scales, etc.) and basic housekeeping / janitorial items.
  • This position works consistently at a light work level and may be asked to work on occasion at a medium or heavy work level when supporting stores or other offsite events. Frequently required to sit, walk, reach and grasp. Occasionally required to be on feet with a mix of standing and walking throughout shift. Up to occasionally, dependent on location, required to climb stairs, step stool and /or ladders.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.

What you Bring as a Candidate:

  • Minimum of 10 years of security-related required.
  • Prior experience in security program development required.
  • Prior experience directly supervising a team, developing and coaching individuals.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology/Criminal Justice or related fields preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint, with skills to learn new computer programs and systems.
  • Understanding of legal implications and ability to assess risk around security and loss prevention matters.
  • Experience working in conjunction with law enforcement, District Attorneys office, and community building orginizations.
  • Collaborative, strategic thinker and problem solver, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with ability to respond to urgent job responsibilities as they arise and flexible when priorities redirect.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including tact and diplomacy, to collaborate, negotiate and communicate effectively and professionally with cross-functional partners at all levels in the company.

  • Ability to travel regularly to store locations and other sites throughout Portland metro area.

Physical and Environmental Work Space: Work occurs in office, a variety of off-site environments and in a grocery store environment which includes surfaces that can be wet and slippery, moderate noise level, and temperature extremes in controlled environments in the cooler and freezer, and depending on location, working outside in all temperatures. There may be exposure to certain allergens and / or chemicals.
