Job Description: Nurse Practitioner

Department: Clinical Services

New Oakland Family Centers provides comprehensive behavioral health and substance abuse services for consumers across Michigan, in both outpatient and partial hospitalization settings.

Reports To: President / Chief Medical Officer / Medical Director / Supervising Physician

Compensation: Salaried Employee and/or W9 Contractor. Commensurate with experience.

Position Summary:

The Nurse Practitioner works in collaboration with a supervising physician to evaluate, diagnose, examine and prescribe medications for patients having psychiatric-mental health problems and those likely to have them. Provide scheduled and/or emergency psychiatric services, physical and psychosocial examination. Develops and manages appropriate treatment plans and provides effective management of patient care with proper evaluation and supervision.

Essential Duties / Functions:

  • Responsible for providing outpatient and partial hospital program care to patients showing a change or decline in mental status, chronic or urgent medical conditions.
  • Perform patient psychiatric evaluations, medication reviews, histories and physicals, risk factor assessment, ordering of therapeutic and diagnostic tests; and attend to consultations and appointments on a scheduled and emergent basis.
  • Prescribe medications following the clinic’s policy, formulary and relevant regulations of the State.
  • Work independently and in collaboration with other members of the medical team, with entitlements to specific clinical privileges approved by the clinic’s Medical Executive Board.
  • Take part in an interdisciplinary team that provides psychiatric care to patients.
  • Consult with physicians on cases that are beyond the scope of qualification of nurse practitioner.
  • Enter all relevant patient data into medical record per clinic policy.
  • Formulate, execute, and review healthcare education delivered to patients and families for diseases prevention.
  • Ensure smooth communication with other health professionals for effective delivering of clinic service to patients.
  • Provide consultation to the clinic’s nursing and medical staff for improvement in their work performance, which enhances overall quality service delivery of the clinic.
  • Maintain all licenses, trainings and credentials to remain in good professional standing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Master of Science in Nursing.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have and maintain a current State of Michigan Nurse Practitioner License and Board Certification as Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Board Certification in other specialties may be required with relevant psychiatric experience and/or post-graduate course work. Registration Certificate from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is required. Must have the ability to be insured in the amounts of $1,000,000/$3,000,000.
  • Experience: Two to three years of psychiatric experience is required.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret human service periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from other professionals, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with non-verbal symbolism in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

Working Conditions: This job operates in a professional office environment. Staff must be prepared to be actively engaged with patients and other staff, and to routinely use standard office equipment and relevant applications.
