Job Overview:
The Department of Justice has broad statutory authority over civil legal matters and proceedings involving the state. The Attorney General is charged with administering and enforcing a wide variety of laws that benefit New Mexico residents. The Consumer Protection Division enforces laws such as the Unfair Practices Act, Fraud Against Taxpayers Act, antitrust laws protecting against price-fixing, bid-rigging and attempts to reduce competition. The Division has a Tobacco Bureau that enforces the Master Settlement Agreement, as well as a Utilities Bureau that examines all applications made by utilities that could impose increased rates on consumers to protect residential, small business, and agricultural utility ratepayers.
