Position Summary: The Department of Data Science at New Jersey Institute ofTechnology (NJIT) invites applications for tenure-track faculty positionsstarting in Fall 2024. Areas of special interest are Big Data, BiomedicalInformatics, Data Visualization, High-Performance Data Analytics, AI andMachine Learning. Exceptional candidates in other areas will also beconsidered. While we are interested in hiring at the rank of AssistantProfessor, exceptional candidates at higher ranks will also be considered.Senior candidates may be expected to play a leadership role as the AssociateDirector of the new NJIT Institute for Data Science, whose Director isDistinguished Professor David Bader.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree by Summer 2024 in arelevant discipline, and outstanding academic credentials that demonstratetheir ability to conduct independent world-class research and attract externalfunding. The successful candidate is also expected to show a commitment to bothundergraduate and graduate education.
NJIT is a Carnegie R1 Research University, with $167M inresearch expenditures in FY22. The Department of Data Science is a newdepartment launched in Fall 2021, currently has 9 faculty members and plans togrow significantly over the next five years. The department includes faculty atall levels including one Distinguished Professor, has faculty with an NSFCAREER award, active NSF and DOE grants, and an NVIDIA AI Lab. The departmentfaculty develops foundational data science methods and conducts research tosolve real-world grand challenges that leverage data science in applicationareas such as FinTech, Health Informatics, and Cybersecurity and play a keyrole in the NJIT Institute for Data Science, the Center for Big Data, theCybersecurity Research Center, and the Center for AI Research. The departmenthas strong connections with local industry and works closely with manycompanies through student Capstone projects, internships, co-ops, and jointR&D projects; these include the major high-tech companies (Amazon,Facebook, Google, Microsoft) as well as financial / Wall Street companies (Bankof America, JP Morgan Chase) and Pharmaceuticals (Johnson and Johnson, Merck).The Department of Data Science is part of the Ying Wu College of Computing(YWCC), alongside the Computer Science Department, which enrolls approximately2,400 students at all levels across nine programs of study, and the InformaticsDepartment, which enrolls 1,000 students at all levels. YWCC comprises 34% ofthe NJIT enrollment, educating more than 4,000 students in computingdisciplines, and graduating ~1,000 computing professionals every year. As such,it is the largest producer of computing talent in the tri-state (NY, NJ, CT)area. The Data Science Department is housed in a state-of-the-art facilityrenovated in 2018. The Ying Wu College of Computing is undergoing significantgrowth as a priority area for NJIT. This growth is an integral part of NJIT'sfive-year strategic plan, which calls for consolidating NJIT as a world-classinstitution of higher education and research.
NJIT is located in Newark's University Heights, a vibrant and sprawling downtown campus close to Rutgers-Newark, New Jersey Innovation Institute, Essex Community College, New Jersey Medical School, University Hospital, and Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. NJIT is located in the Newark - Jersey City - New York City metropolitan region and its burgeoning Silicon Alley tech sector. NJIT has recently expanded its graduate programs to Jersey City, just across the Hudson River from the financial district of Lower Manhattan in New York City, where it serves the many working professionals in that region.
Known as The Garden State, New Jersey ranks third in thenation in terms of median household income, features excellent quality of life,and offers a wide range of lifestyle and entertainment options, including urbanareas (Newark/ New York metropolitan area), suburban areas (Princeton),oceanfront areas (Atlantic City, the Jersey Shore) and rural/bucolic areas(along the Delaware River in Western New Jersey). Also, Newark's Penn Stationis on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, which links several metropolitan areas fromWashington DC to Boston MA by the Acela high-speed train.
