New Jersey Courts is Hiring a Judges Secretary 1 - Family Division Near Trenton, NJ

SALARY: The salary range for this position is $45,797.84 to $68,329.73 for Schedule A, and $45,797.84 to $64,913.23 for Schedule B. For newly hired individuals, the starting salary will normally be at the minimum of the salary range. For current Judiciary employees, salary upon promotion or advancement will be an increase of 5% of base salary, not to exceed the maximum of the range, or the minimum salary of the band/level, whichever is greater.Judiciary employees hired prior to June 3, 2014, are considered Schedule A. Newly hired individuals, and Judiciary employees hired on or after June 3, 2014, are considered Schedule B.

The Mercer Vicinage is seeking well-organized, detail-oriented individuals with excellent interpersonal and communication skills to support a Superior Court Judge. The selected individual must have strong typing, technical, and administrative skills. 

Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Conforming judge's orders and decisions and maintaining the workflow in and out of judicial chambers
  • Proofreading typed material for accuracy and correct punctuation, spelling, and grammar
  • Coordinating and communicating the judge's schedule with division administration and case management personnel
  • Preparing and submitting local and state reports
  • Managing of incoming and outgoing communications, including mail, telephone, case conference calls and follow-up of the same
  • Procuring supplies, equipment, and inventory for chambers
  • Formatting and typing charges, judicial opinions, and other legal documents
  • Composing routine correspondence, such as form letters or standard replies to inquiries
  • Composing non-routine correspondence
  • Answering inquiries from attorneys, staff, and public
  • Additional duties as required and assigned 
Three (3) years of experience in an office environment performing a variety of clerical and support services to include keyboarding and one or more of the following: preparing and analyzing legal documents, processing legal or other documents, transcribing information, and scheduling meetings or appointments.
 
Substitution: Successful completion of a clerical training program with a minimum of 700 classroom training hours or 30 semester hour credits in secretarial science may be substituted for one (1) year of experience indicated above. Course work must include typing skills, methods, and procedures; other courses may include, but are not limited to, office procedures, word processing, and business English.
 
Testing: Applicants selected to interview must pass an appointing authority administered examination to demonstrate typing skills of at least 40 words per minute or possess proof of having taken the required skills test (for example, the New Jersey Civil Service Commission or New Jersey Judiciary typing proficiency certificate).
 
Note: Knowledge of legal terminology and working knowledge of Microsoft Office is helpful.
Driver's License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Authorization to Work: US citizenship is not required. Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.
Special Note: Newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting. All data received will be kept in strict confidence except to inform the individual of the findings and what action will be taken as a result of this information.
Residency Law: In accordance with N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), the "New Jersey First Act," all persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Any person may request an exemption from that requirement from the Employee Residency Review Committee in the Department of Labor & Workforce Development on the basis of either hardship or employer critical need.
