The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, Division of Law, is looking for an attorney with supervisory experience to function as an Assistant Section Chief for the Division of Law, in the Public Records Advice & DisputesPractice Group in Trenton, NJ. The position will be appointed as a Deputy Attorney General 2 with a salary range between $114,415.39 to $163,799.20 per year. Salary offered will fall within the range posted and is non-negotiable.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Attorney General has broad oversight of the state’s legal and law enforcement matters. As the head of the Department of Law & Public Safety, the Attorney General supervises a wide range of Divisions, Offices, and Commissions, consisting of over 2,800 sworn law enforcement officers, 600 attorneys, and thousands of other public servants.

ABOUT THE DIVISION:

The Division of Law (DOL) serves as primary legal counsel for New Jersey state government. Generally speaking, this work takes three forms: by providing legal advice to the state’s departments and agencies, by defending the state in civil litigation, and by bringing civil lawsuits against individuals, corporations, and other entities that violate the law and harm New Jersey and its residents. Staffed by nearly 500 attorneys, DOL’s responsibilities cover a broad swath of legal issues, including those involving banking, child protection, corrections, education, environmental, finance, health, insurance, taxation, and transportation matters.

ABOUT THE SECTION:

The Public Records Advice & Disputes Practice Group has overall management and supervisory responsibility for the handling of public records requests filed with State agencies under the Open Public Records Act. In addition to overseeing the Public Records Advice and Disputes Section, the Practice Group provides direction and policy guidance to Deputy Attorneys General throughout the Division of Law to ensure consistent legal advice and counsel on all issues involving public record requests. The Practice Group also oversees the defense of all public records litigation filed against State agencies in Superior Court and in the Government Records Council.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Attorneys General and the Section Chief in the Public Records Advice & Disputes Practice Group in Trenton, will:

· Provide counsel and representation to the Section's clients;

· Assist with planning and managing the supervision and operations of the Section;

· Assign matters and supervise Deputy Attorneys General in the Section;

· Litigate and supervise litigation, as needed;

· Evaluate the performance of assigned Deputy Attorneys General;

· Conduct case file reviews;

· Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor.

· Admission to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey.

· Four (4) years of experience as a practicing attorney, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

OTHER KEY FACTORS:

· Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
