New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is Hiring a DOL #24-131: Associate Attorneys (DAG 4 or 3 - Trenton) Near Trenton, NJ

The New Jersey Attorney General’s office is looking for associate attorneys to function as Deputy Attorneys General in the Litigation Practice Group – Law Enforcement and Corrections Section of the Division of Law, Trenton, NJ. The positions will be appointed to the title Deputy Attorney General 4 or 3 with a salary range between $87,578.62 to $143,971.92 per year. For newly hired individuals, the starting salary and title will be determined by the Department commensurate with experience. Salary offers and titles are non-negotiable and will fall within the range posted.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Attorney General has broad oversight of the state’s legal and law enforcement matters. As the head of the Department of Law & Public Safety, the Attorney General supervises a wide range of Divisions, Offices, and Commissions, consisting of over 2,800 sworn law enforcement officers, 600 attorneys, and thousands of other public servants.

ABOUT THE DIVISION:

The Division of Law (DOL) serves as primary legal counsel for New Jersey state government. Generally speaking, this work takes three forms: by providing legal advice to the state’s departments and agencies, by defending the state in civil litigation, and by bringing civil lawsuits against individuals, corporations, and other entities that violate the law and harm New Jersey and its residents. Staffed by nearly 500 attorneys, DOL’s responsibilities cover a broad swath of legal issues, including those involving banking, child protection, corrections, education, environmental, finance, health, insurance, taxation, and transportation matters.

ABOUT THE SECTION:

The Law Enforcement and Corrections Section practice in the U.S. District Court, Third Circuit Court of Appeals, N.J. Superior Court, N.J. Appellate Division, OAL, Government Records Council and the EEOC. SPEC provides primary representation to the N.J. State Police, Department of Corrections, Parole Board and the Juvenile Justice Commission. Individual and class action civil rights claims include matters such as excessive force, fatal shootings, wrongful arrest, conditions of confinement, religious, medical and legal access and ADA violations. Deputies hone their written advocacy skills through a significant appellate practice, with opportunities to argue in the Appellate Division. Trial skills are sharpened in defense of employment claims brought against State agencies, with opportunities to try cases in State and Federal court.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Attorneys General in the Litigation Practice Group and the Section Chief and Assistant Section Chiefs of the Law Enforcement and Corrections Section, will:

· Defend the State, its agencies and employees in civil rights litigation in state and federal courts;

· Handle the full spectrum of litigation, including pleadings, discovery, depositions, motion practice and trial;

· Performs other related legal work as required.

· Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor.

· Admission to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey is required.

· Two (2) OR three (3) years of experience as a practicing attorney.

· Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.

· Candidates should submit a supplemental document, included with your resume, outlining (a) litigation experience in State and Federal court; and/or (b) investigation experience.

· All offers of employment are conditional subject to the applicant agreeing to and then passing a background check that may include fingerprinting.

· For newly hired individuals, the starting salary and title will be determined by the Department commensurate with experience.

· Salary offers and titles are non-negotiable and will fall within the range posted.
