New Hanover County is Hiring a Long Range Planner Near Hanover, NC

New Hanover County's Planning and Land Use department is seeking a motivated Long Range Planner to perform professional planning duties including researching and drafting text amendments. This position works in coordination with the long range and the current planning teams to implement New Hanover County’s Comprehensive Plan and other projects, and initiatives, particularly housing, to promote more efficient development patterns within unincorporated New Hanover County. This position requires strong analytical skills, competence in managing multiple tasks and projects, developing partnerships with stakeholders to ensure the comprehensive plan’s vision is achieved; and the ability to clearly communicate technical information through written reports, memorandums, and presentations. Typical work activities include demographic and land use research, policy and data analysis, community-level planning, and public outreach. Duties include evaluating and preparing written reports on amendments to long range plans, housing initiatives, development codes, the Official Zoning Map, and other related proposals; serving as staff liaison in a variety of planning focus areas, including housing, transportation, environmental/natural resources; preparing technical studies and reports; preparing or assisting in the preparation of grant applications; and other duties of a similar nature or level.

Hours:
8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday. Must be available to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.Salary Information:,Thehiring rangefor this position is$56,351 - $76,074Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations. Bilingual candidates are eligible for a differential (5%) when performing Spanish language interpretation during the course of work. Trainee Opportunity:Applicants who meet the required minimum education but lack the required planning experience may be considered, and if hired, would be paid at least the minimum trainee rateof $53,668 and will remain at a trainee rate until the minimum experience qualifications are met. The maximum period for an employee to remain in a trainee status is two (2) years. All experience requirements must be met within two (2) years of employment.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Planning or a related field and two (2) years of professional level planning experience
OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in an unrelated field and three (3) years of professional level planning experience 
    • or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above
  • AICP Certification must be obtained within five years of employment
 What will make your application stand out: 
  • Master's Degree in Planning or a related field 
  • Previous experience in housing-related planning 
  • Current AICP Certification 
  • Previous experience in grant writing

 Required Licenses/Certifications: 

  • Valid Driver's License and good driving record required at time of application. 
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License required by first date of employment with good driving record.
