The Landa Park Golf Course, a 2023 Texas Travel Awards winner, is looking for an organized, passionate individual to join their team in a new position of Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. The renowned golf course is nestled along the Comal River, covering 122 acres of Texas Hill Country. 
 
GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, organizes, supervises, and directs the maintenance and management of golf course grounds for the City’s Landa Park Golf Course.PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
  • Supervises maintenance crew; prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects; trains and evaluates staff; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues; reviews the completed work to assure the work quality and timely accomplishment of assigned duties.
  • Continuously monitors golf course grounds, including greens, tees, fairways, rough and hazards; identifies projects and priorities, and supervises the work activities to maintain, repair and improve the turf, grounds and irrigation systems; inspects work in progress and completed work for compliance to safety standards. Determine when the course will be opened or closed based on weather conditions and playability of the course.
  • Assures the golf course maintains the best possible playing conditions including proper placement of pins, tee markers, and proper raking of bunkers.
  • Supervises and assists in the maintenance and repair of golf course irrigation systems. Supervises drainage problems, including irrigation controls and pumping stations; supervises proper water management.
  • Inspects and tests turf grasses and turf condition and identifies irrigation problems, insect infestation and other problems; determines and implements appropriate action to restore turf to optimum playing conditions. 
  • Oversees pesticide, chemical and fertilizer applications; tracks hazardous chemical, and reports on OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets.
  • Confers with Golf Manager to prepare for special events and tournaments.
  • Assists in the maintenance and operation of golf course equipment, including backhoe, bobcat, tractor, mower, aerator, and sprayer.
  • Assist with preparation and administration of annual maintenance budgets.
  •  Manages a variety of administrative activities including computer records management, employee scheduling, payroll reporting, maintenance procedure and work activity reports; maintains inventories and assures that adequate materials, supplies, and tools are available; processes and responds to work requests and complaints; processes invoices and accounts payable/receivable.
  • Evaluates and analyzes issues and recommends and implements solutions; provides leadership to assure that construction and maintenance programs are in alignment with the Department's goals and objectives and within budget constraints.
  • Monitors and reviews trends in turf management and irrigation systems and recommends new equipment and maintenance procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required. 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree with course work emphasis in turf grass or golf course management preferred; supplemented by two (2) years previous experience in turf grass and/or golf course management, and two (2) years supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Technical training in turf maintenance and irrigation management is preferred.

Required Licenses or Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Non-Commercial Pest Control Applicator License (TDA) is required within twelve (12) months of date of hire.
Required Knowledge of:
  • City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
  • Golf course maintenance, turf management and agronomy principles and techniques.
  • Methods, equipment and materials used in golf course, facilities and equipment maintenance.
  • Proper operation, use and care of specialized tools and equipment used in golf course maintenance.
  • City safety rules and regulations, safe work practices, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Regulations and standards governing the maintenance of public golf course and recreation facilities. 
  • OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.
  • Safety protocols for specialized equipment operation and the handling of pesticides and chemicals.
  • Principles and practices of administrative management, including personnel rules, cost accounting, budgeting, and employee supervision.
  • Principles of record keeping and records management.

Required Skill in:
  • Monitoring golf course grounds and identifying maintenance and safety issues.
  • Evaluating golf course grounds and soil conditions and managing projects to assure that the grounds and the turf are properly maintained.
  • Determining appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines and completing maintenance and repair projects.
  • Safely operating and maintaining various types of maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Supervising staff, and delegating tasks and authority.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard business software.
