Position Overview

Since 1910, Scouting has helped mold the future leaders of this country by combing educational activities and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes and understands that helping youth puts us on a path toward a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.

The Camp Health Officer is responsible to the Camp Director for working to maintain the overall health and safety of the Scouts, leaders, visitors, and staff in camp. The Health Office must possess a strong background in emergency care. the Health Officer should also understand or be willing to learn the basic procedures to be followed in the program and service areas of the camp in regard to the protection of the health and safety of those in camp.

Today’s summer camp staff are a diverse group of men and women sharing a dynamic career offering independence, achievement, and stability. This is work that makes a difference, work that calls one to continual learning and challenge, work that offers solid compensation, experiences, and advancement.

This is a seasonal position (mid-June to the end of July).


Responsibilities

  • Provide emergency and non-emergency care to Scouts, leaders, and staff.
  • Maintaining the health lodge in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Maintaining a stock of first aid supplies in program and service areas.
  • Keeping detailed and accurate records of all medical care provided in camp through the camp health lodge.
  • Maintaining adequate infirmary space in the health lodge for sick or injured persons.
  • Follow the standing orders issued by the Camp Physician.
  • Forwarding patients to the local clinic or emergency room as needed.
  • Reviewing accepted first aid procedures with staff.
  • Keeping Annual Health and Medical Records from Scouts, leaders, and staff members as they arrive at camp. Informing appropriate staff members of limitations of specific campers as necessary.
  • Keeping adequate inventory records of medical supplies and equipment so that the camp health lodge can be adequately stocked.
  • Reporting the need for additional medical supplies and equipment to the Camp Director as the need arises.
  • Submitted a report on the operation of the camp health lodge to the camp director at the end of the season.
  • Communicate with unit leaders, Scouts, visitors, and staff.
  • Maintain high standards for personal appearance and hygiene.
  • Obey and enforce all applicable policies, practices, and procedures approved by the New Birth of Freedom Council and the Boy Scouts of America.
  • Know, understand, and implement emergency action plans when needed.
  • Relay any issues that could impact the safe and successful operation of the camp to the Camp Director immediately.
  • Exemplify all aspects of the Scout Oath and Law and serve as a role model for staff and Scouts.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned by the Camp Director.

Desired Skills

  • High moral character and strong leadership ability.
  • Working knowledge of Scout BSA programs.
  • Familiarity with Hidden Valley Scout Reservation facilities and traditions.
  • Auditory and oral abilities to effectively communicate.
  • Physical ability to carry out the proper standard of care.

Requirements

  • Must be willing to accept and meet the Boy Scouts of America’s leadership and membership standards and subscribe to the Scout Oath and Law.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Possess valid credentials in the area of emergency care from a nationally recognized certifying body. Preferred certifications are EMT, Paramedic, LPN, RN, and LVN.
  • Offers for employment are subject to criminal, reference, and motor vehicle background checks.
  • Auditory and oral abilities to effectively communicate.
  • Current CPR Certification required.
  • Meet the membership requirements of the BSA
  • The ability of sight, Medical approval by a physician to work.
  • Physical ability to walk and lift 40 Lbs.
  • Physical ability to participate in and instruct outdoor skills.

Compensation

The New Birth of Freedom Council, Boy Scouts of America offers a competitive salary starting at $525/week, onsite housing, and meals.
