Position: Family Violence Prevention Specialist

Hours Per Week: 40

Status: Non-Exempt

Responsible to: Program Manager

New Beginnings is committed to ending sexual, domestic, and stalking violence through the provision of safe and effective services, including emergency refuge and support; and works toward social change by promoting an effective community response to violence.

Family Violence Prevention Specialist Essential Functions:

Liaison for Division of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF)

  • Provide consultation to DCYF in identifying partner abuse in families where allegations of child abuse/neglect have been made
  • Meet with DCYF workers to address the safety needs and concerns of victims in every case involving domestic violence
  • Team with DCYF workers in meetings with victims and/or their children when safe and in accordance with New Beginnings policies
  • Consult with DCYF workers throughout the duration of domestic violence related cases
  • Act as a liaison whenever possible for DCYF District Office and New Beginnings
  • Provide court advocacy for victims, especially related to DCYF hearings
  • Provide weekly updated schedule to DCYF staff
  • Maintain clear, accurate and timely records using agency contact logs
  • Attend DCYF staff meetings
  • Maintain meaningful contact with DCYF supervisors and workers
  • Provide advocacy, domestic violence education, conflict resolution, and emotional support to shelter guests and non-resident clients
  • Provide hotline coverage as needed according to agency’s monthly schedule
  • Offer immediate assistance to victims/survivors on a walk-in and phone-in basis
  • Remain knowledgeable of agency guidelines and procedures so independent decisions may be made in daily and in emergency situations
  • Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships establishing tact, integrity, and good judgment
  • Participate in system data collection in an accurate, complete, and timely manner
  • Attend all agency staff meetings
  • Keep supervisor current on status of collaborative efforts with DCYF. Actively participate in supervision
  • Participate in agency events and fundraising
  • Provide other related tasks as requested

Preferred Skills:

  • Bachelor degree in related field (preferred)
  • Experience working with family violence issues and excellent knowledge of issues of domestic violence
  • Effective communication skills and desire to work on the topics of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and elder abuse
  • Successfully complete thirty (30) hours of agency training and 6 hours annual continued education
  • Clear understanding of 173C and confidentiality laws
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and insurance coverage

The employee is required to sit frequently for long periods either at a computer workstation or at meetings. The employee may be required to climb two flights of stairs to access office and meeting space.
