Job Description
Nevada State University invites applications for a Student Worker - Workforce Development - Scorpion STEAM Academy Program Assistant. The Program Assistant will heavily contribute to the coordination and implementation of Workforce Development programming.
Scorpion STEAM Academy (SSA) at Nevada State University supports the development and growth of its diverse community of young STEAM learners through innovative, engaging experiences that promote the acquisition of interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to enhance student's personal, academic, and professional career success while meeting the needs of tomorrow's workforce. SSA promotes an increased interest in science, technology, engineering, and math, including their applications in art and music, through targeted classroom-based learning reinforced by hands-on projects and educational field trips to facilities of industry partners.
Summer 2024 camps will take place from Monday-Friday between June and July. The incumbent can expect to work between 4-8 hours a day. SSA day camps will run the following weeks
Week 1: June 3rd through June 7th.
Week 2: June 10th through June 14th.
Week 3: June 17th through June 21st.
Week 4: June 24th through June 28th.
No camps the week of July 1st through July 5th.
Week 5: July 8th through July 12th.
Week 6: July 15th through July 19th.
Week 7: July 22nd through July 26th
Continued employment into the academic year is not guaranteed as the SSA is a limited term program.

Core Responsibilities:
SSA Program Assistant will perform specialized and technical duties requiring research and analysis, independent decision-making, and application of best practices in support of activities. The incumbent, with limited supervision from the Director and Program Specialist, will be expected to:
Program Management & Development
  • Maintain and demonstrate a working knowledge of Workforce Development procedures and policies plus relevant University regulations to perform duties requiring a higher degree of responsibility and judgement without supervision.
  • Produce highly technical reports that synthesize and summarize research in support of unit activities, this includes grant writing assistance.
  • Assist with recruitment, training, coordination of student workers and program volunteers while providing effective mentorship and support to peers.
General Administrative Duties
  • Prioritize work to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner with little to no supervision and/or training.
  • Perform data entry and assist with the evaluation and reporting of program-specific assessment data.
  • Students will have the opportunity to co-develop role responsibilities that align with departmental needs based on their skill set, interests, and career aspirations.
  • Assist with database management, including duties related to the creation, reading, updating, and deleting of data in a database.
  • Assist with web development (e.g., Workforce page and registration) to ensure that the website is visually appealing, easy to navigate, and adherent to accessibility requirements.
SSA Program-Specific Support
  • Demonstrate initiative to facilitate implementation and coordination of SSA activities and personnel.
  • Promote high educational outcome expectations for SSA students by fostering an inclusive environment and through effective classroom management.
  • Supervise assigned administrative activities, including but not limited to, drop-off and pick-up procedures, program inventory, and material/supply purchasing for SSA.
  • Supervise lower-level student workers, including during off-campus SSA activities (e.g., field trips).
  • Participate in SSA activities as needed including, but not limited to, classroom lessons, site visits, presentations.
  • Offer instructional support, as needed, by assisting with delivery of SSA specialized technical programming in a structured environment.
Other Expectations
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and demonstrate the ability to follow instructions and receive/apply constructive feedback.
  • Provide advanced and outstanding customer service through excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Perform other duties requiring an exceptionally diversified skillset, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Must be enrolled as a degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in Spring 2024 and Fall 2024 at Nevada State.
  • Commitment to work 20-40 hours per week, Monday-Friday from June 1 to July 31.
  • Strong communication (written and oral), interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and strong interest in working with diverse and socioeconomically disadvantaged students.
  • Employment is contingent upon a successful criminal background check.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with youth, including demonstrated sensitivity to diverse minority populations.
  • Have an interest in higher education administration and/or youth programming.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or another language.
  • Eligible for federal work-study financial aid program.
  • Certified in CPR/AED and First Aid (training will be provided to all employees).
Work Hours:
Student employees can work up to 19.5 hours per week.
February-May: Student employees will work up to 19.5 hours per week during academic periods and while classes are in session.
June-August: Student workers may be able to work Monday-Friday, 35-40 hours per week between 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, if approved by the campus Executive of the department and so as long as student employees are not enrolled in any classes during the summer term.
There is a mandatory training on May 28-29, 2024 for all SSA student workers.
Hourly Rate:
$15.25 per hour.
