Summary
This is a Full-time Research Assistant position in the lab of Dr. Woo Shik Shin in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. We are looking for the most qualified candidate with interests in one or more of the following topics: antibiotic resistance, drug discovery, Alzheimer’s disease therapy development, drug-delivery, and computer-aided drug design. Principal Functional Responsibilities
This role will require assisting with and performing scientific experiments under the direction of the PI. Experiments may include, but are not limited to, enzyme kinetics, bacteria cell culture, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (MIC and disc diffusion), human cell culture, MTT assays, Western blot, animal studies (related to either antimicrobial development or Alzheimer’s disease research), manuscript/data report writing, training new students, analyzing data, and general laboratory management. The specific experience gained from this position may be well suited for anyone wanting to gain research experience before continuing into a graduate program, medical, or pharmacy school. We also prefer candidates with prior experience or qualifications in academic document preparation.
Qualifications
SKILLS: Experience in biology and knowledge of common biology lab techniques is required. An ideal candidate will have experience in either of the following two areas:
(i) microbiology: bacteria cell culture, pouring plates, plating bacteria, plasmid transformation, enzyme-level studies, MIC, disc diffusion, time-kill assays, MTT assay, Western blot, solution preparation, mouse studies (wound infection model and IV injection).
(ii) neuroscience: human cell culture, MTT assay, Western blot, basic understanding of confocal imaging, fixing and staining, ThT/ThS assays, mouse studies (IV and ICV injection).
The insufficient experience and skills of the applicant will undergo a comprehensive training program under the guidance of current laboratory members.
EDUCATION/DEGREES: Minimum Required Qualifications -
Applicant must have a B.S. degree, preferably in Biology, Microbiology, or the equivalent experience. 1-2 years of relevant laboratory experience is required. Experience with GraphPad Prism, Excel, and PowerPoint is desired. The applicant with insufficient experience and skills will undergo a comprehensive training program under the guidance of current laboratory members.
Using laboratory techniques, we are able to screen for optimal treatments of antibacterial agents. Benefits of this job include but are not limited to constant learning, and co-authorship of peer-reviewed papers.
Key Skills, Personal Characteristics, and Key Competencies
COMPUTERSKILLS: Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is required. Familiarity with additional software such as ChemDraw and GraphPad Prism is desired.
LANGUAGESKILLS: Ability to write, read, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence is also needed. We also expect ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty.

Must be able to utilize applicable laboratory equipment necessary for the job, as well as basic office equipment. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, sit, talk, and hear.
