Summary
After successful completion of the NEOMED Police Department’s field training program, officer will enforce state laws and University and departmental rules and regulations, patrol University property on foot or in vehicle, provide emergency and nonemergency services, conduct investigations, write reports, perform crime prevention activities, control and direct traffic, and perform special assignments when necessary.

Pay Grade 5
Starting Salary Range: $19-$21/hour
Police Officer II
Pay Grade 7
Starting Salary Range: $22-$24/hour

Principal Functional Responsibilities
1. Patrol buildings and grounds on foot and in a patrol car; protects lives and property; prevent crime
2. Perform routine administrative duties related to police work (e.g., keep log of unusual incidents and security conditions, complete reports of police activities, answer telephone)
3. Investigate complaints, conduct criminal and accident investigations, make inquiries, take and record information and submit written reports; conduct continuing or follow-up investigations and review changes in laws and regulations
4. Monitor traffic conditions and parking lots to insure efficient flow of traffic; check parking permits; issue traffic tickets as necessary
5. Perform security functions at special events; assist other law enforcement agencies; protect and assist visitors; performs other special service functions as needed
6. Participate in liaison programs, community policing activities, and community education programs
7. Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Police Officer I
Education/Degrees:
  • Successful completion of Ohio Peace Officer basic training program
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Experience:
  • Previous law enforcement experience preferred
Police Officer II
Education/Degrees:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of two years (i.e., 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) of college level academic credits in criminal justice, emergency management, or related field, or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Successful completion of Ohio Peace Officer basic training program
Experience:
  • Three years full time law enforcement experience
  • Supervisory experience preferred
Key Skills, Personal Characteristics, and Key Competencies
  • Knowledge of criminal and civil law, first aid and emergency care, safety practices
  • Skill in use and maintenance of firearms, operation of motor vehicles and other equipment, defensive driving, and self-defense
  • Ability to perform the duties of an Ohio Peace Officer immediately upon appointment
  • Ability to recognize threatening or unusual conditions and take appropriate action
  • Ability to prioritize tasks based on importance and exercise independent judgment
  • Ability to observe situations analytically and objectively
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in an emergency and exercise firmness, tact, and impartiality
  • Ability to demonstrate physical fitness
  • Skill in interpersonal communication to effectively interact with University personnel and public in person and over the telephone (e.g., to resolve conflicts and provide assistance).

Preferred Qualifications
Physical Requirements
Must be able to utilize applicable tools and equipment necessary for the job, as well as basic office equipment. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, sit; talk; and hear. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. May be required to submit to drug testing.
Exposed to law-enforcement hazards (e.g. gunfire, driving at high speeds, etc.) and variable weather conditions; occasionally requires extended periods of walking, standing, or physical exertion (e.g., running); may work varied hours and shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays; may be called to work in exigent and emergency situations; requires on-and off-campus travel.
