ncsu-sb is Hiring an Industrial Hygienist/Research Safety Specialist Near Raleigh, NC

The primary purpose of this position is to provide professional support and management for the University’s Research Safety programs. More specifically, this position will be a primary manager of the university’s Chemical Hygiene Program including the Lab Safety Plan program. The incumbent will be expected to support all ongoing programs in this area and help to develop new programs where deficiencies are found so as to minimize EHS risk to persons and the environment. Inspection, monitoring, training, testing, program development and communication within the campus organizations are common activities. Additional Industrial Hygiene duties such as exposure assessment and monitoring are included.Duties include:Primary manager of the NCSU Chemical Hygiene Plan and associated Lab Safety Plan program for the University.Update Research Safety programs to reflect current and emerging trends in occupational health and safety.Review emerging issues, regulatory changes and code development and presents impacts on the University infrastructure, personnel and programmatic needs.Responds to inquiries from faculty, staff and students concerning EHS policies and procedures in their areas of responsibility including chemical safety in laboratories, local exhaust ventilation, workplace chemical exposures, chemical incompatibilities/reactions, process hazard review, and chemical storage with appropriate follow-up inspections and report preparation as needed.Reviews IH tools and methods and prepares/updates documentation in their use and care. Recommends additions and upgrades to equipment to meet current professional standards of data precision and accuracy.Manages Chemical Hygiene Plan and Lab Safety Plan program with a strong background in chemical safety in a laboratory setting.Develops and maintains Laboratory Exposure Prevention and Assessment Program.Performs exposure assessments to verify compliance and program effectiveness.Prepares reports on corrective actions with completion dates.Reviews hazardous material purchases for chemicals of concern, and communicates risks/hazards with end-users.Performs laboratory hazard reviews and hazard assessments to identify physical and health hazards of the chemicals/chemical reactions and provides guidelines and recommends control methods to prevent/reduce potential exposure hazards and accidents. Maintains/updates program database and control book.Works with others in improving the laboratory exhaust ventilation program, nanomaterial safety, emergency eyewash/shower, and laboratory chemical safety programs.Assists with laser safety and other non-ionizing safety programs including training/inspections/investigations; assists in corrective action strategies; Performs routine laboratory inspections with the University Inspection Team (UNIT), applies in-depth knowledge of local, State and Federal regulations to determine compliance within program area(s); oversees compliance with EHS measures and guidelines. Reports results to the PIs and managers to initiate corrective actions.Performs exposure assessments to determine if exposure limits are being met. Prepares reports of findings and corrective action if warranted. ( e.g. OSHA regulated chemicals ).Reviews and comments on building plans/construction/renovations per code, Health and safety regs. and campus policy.Meets with campus personnel to discuss regulatory issues and means and methods that should be implemented to ensure compliance.Participates in emergency response actions to limit exposures to chemical and physical hazards; may be required to wear chemical protective gear and respiratory protection during emergency spill responses.Interprets inspection results and recommendations effectively to higher level administrators; implements inspection recommendations.Designs, develops and updates training programs and guidelines for academic audiences.Training may consist of classroom, on-line and one on one training.Provides classroom EHS training for new students and employees , designs new need-base laboratory health and safety training, laser and non-ionizing safety training.Assists with other campus EHS training as needed.
