Job Overview:

NCATS, a major research component of NIH, seeks applications from exceptional candidates to fill a scientist position in the Process Chemistry Laboratory within the Therapeutic Development Branch (TDB) of the center’s Division of Preclinical Innovation. We are seeking a skilled Chemist to join our team. The successful candidate will possess a deep knowledge of scale-up and process chemistry skills for the development of safe and scalable synthetic routes, with early and late-phase development experience and delivering drug substances under tight timelines. The successful candidate will have accountability for creating and developing a synthetic route to deliver active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) within a specification range fit for the phase of development.

Responsibilities:

• Synthesize key intermediates and drug substances from gram to kilogram scale;
• Design and develop safe and scalable processes for organic compounds of specicific therapeutic targets;
• Purify organic compounds using a variety of techniques including chromatography, extraction, distillation, crystallization, trituration, etc.
• Analyze and characterize organic compounds using state-of-the art analytical technologies;
• Use scientific data tools to identify relevant scientific literature precedence to support reaction planning and execution;
• Interpret and clearly summarize experimental details in reports and presentations to communicate progress and results for internal/external purposes;
• Proactively identifies and manages CRO/CMO resources;
• Contribute directly to technology transfer from internal/external resources;
• Maintain standards for all laboratory records, internal reports, and external communications;
• Authors technological reports, publication, patent, and regulatory submissions;
• Maintain general lab instruments.

Requirements:

• Master's degree with 5 years or PhD with 3 years of related experience
• Proven experience in organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and scientific research
• Working experience in synthesis of complex organic compounds, and experience in synthetic peptides, oligonucleotides, polymers, and biologics will be a plus.
• Familiarity with laboratory protocols and safety procedures
• Understanding regulatory requirement in CMC for early clinical development stage
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Keen attention to detail and be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously
