The Challenge
We are looking for an experienced Engineering Technician II to join our Kinston Resident Engineering team and serve as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects.
In this role, you will:
Support senior technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts.
Monitor contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications.
Observe and document contractor operations.
Make measurements and calculations of pay quantities.
Perform standardized material sampling and testing.
Work independently or as part of a larger NCDOT/consultant inspector team.
Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.
Safely drive a state-owned vehicle in the daily performance of duties.
What You Bring
Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction.
Knowledge in understanding contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
Sampling and material testing to evaluate acceptance experience.
Engineering skills in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.
Experience maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.
Safety toe shoes.
Ability to obtain and maintain certifications to perform material sampling and testing.
Communications skills to communicate effectively with co-workers, contractors, and the public.
Ability to apply math skills, such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
Good eyesight to use testing equipment, read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components.
Ability to exercise limited decision making and judgement.
Ability to apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations.
Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, climbing, and kneeling.
Strength to lift 50 pounds.
Education & Experience
Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
2 years relevant technician-level experience; or
An equivalent combination of training and experience.
Notes
You may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic.
You will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions.
You may need to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required for any assigned project.
