Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities is where cultural and intellectual diversity meet. With majors in the sciences, humanities and the arts, the college has a culture of collaboration that encourages students to discover their own path. The mission of the Department of Language and Literature is to engage students in languages, cultures, literatures, linguistics, and writing. The department foster students' analytical and creative thinking, problem-solving abilities, and communication strategies that reflect awareness of global perspectives. The department offers BA degrees in English, Spanish, and Interdisciplinary Studies as well as a MA degree in English.
Primary Purpose of Position
Under the supervision of the Department Chair and the Dean of the College, the Assistant/Associate Professor and Writing Program Administrator will be responsible for teaching three courses per semester, with at least one being first-year writing; curriculum development and revision of ENG 1050, 1110, and 1210; periodically reviewing, selecting, and ordering textbooks for all Composition courses; observing and evaluating faculty teaching first-year writing courses; assessment of the courses within the Writing Program every semester; chairing the First-year Writing Committee.

The successful candidate will possess excellent written and oral communication skills and must exhibit the ability to create an engaging teaching, learning, and research environment that promotes creativity, innovation, and the discovery of new knowledge; must display a commitment to student success that includes the recruitment, retention, graduation, and placement of undergraduate and graduate students; must demonstrate a commitment to an open and collegial style of communication and management; must exhibit a strong commitment to North Carolina Central University and the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities' mission to provide a quality education to a diverse student body.
Minimum Education/Experience
The successful candidate must have the PhD in English, Composition and Rhetoric, Communication Studies, Literature, or a related field, and a record of teaching, scholarship, and service commensurate with the rank of assistant or associate professor. The candidate must also possess effective communication, interpersonal, leadership, and administrative skills. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of leadership experience in promoting excellence in teaching, research, service, curriculum development, program review and assessment.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Instructional
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
The Assistant/Associate Professor will teach three (3) courses per semester, ranging from English Composition I and II, Advanced Composition, Technical Writing, Rhetorical Theory, Theories of Writing, and other Upper-level Composition courses within the faculty member's areas of expertise. The normal course load is four (4) courses per semester; however, the administrative responsibilities warrant one-course release per semester.
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
The Assistant/Associate Professor, WPA-Writing Program Administrator. As WPA, the faculty member will be responsible for the curriculum, administration, and assessment of ENG 1050 (Fundamentals of College Writing), ENG 1110 (English Composition I), and 1210 (English Composition II). These responsibilities involve updating and revising the master syllabuses periodically to conform to GEC standards within the university and to respond to the needs of students within the first-year writing program; observing faculty on a semesterly or annual basis as part of their annual faculty evaluation; chairing the Writing Program committee; designing, implementing, and analyzing assessment tools every semester. The administrative role fulfills expected department service.
Function Research
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
The Assistant/Associate Professor is expected to maintain an active scholarly agenda in the field of Composition Studies, especially in his or her areas of expertise and research interest. The faculty member is expected to attend and participate in regional and national conferences on Writing Program Administration, such as the annual AWP (Association of Writers and Writing Programs) Conference.
