Position Summary:

The primary function of the Dietary Aide is to assist in the preparation and serving of meals as directed by the Food Service Manager. Other related responsibilities include set up, storage, and cleaning in the kitchen and dining room areas. All of these activities should contribute to the Dietary Service Team’s objective of providing for the dietary needs of the Sisters and guests with proper consideration for nutrition, sanitation, flavor, appearance, and cost.

Qualifications:

The Dietary Aide shall have the following:

1) General knowledge of meal preparation, cleaning, and sanitation practices.

2) Ability to analyze prepared food for flavor, texture, temperature, and aroma.

3) Experience with (or ability to quickly learn) the safe and proper operation of stoves, ovens, mixers, slicers, coffee makers, garbage disposals and other kitchen appliances and equipment.

4) Ability to safely and properly use knives, forks, spoons, spatulas, pitchers, measuring cups, and various other hand utensils for food preparation and serving.

5) Ability to safely handle dishes and trays containing hot foods and liquids.

6) Ability to use a broom, dustpan, mop, dustcloth, scraper, dishcloth, vacuum cleaner, washing machine, dishwasher and other hand tools and appliances for cleaning.

7) Ability to bend, stretch, kneel and use step stool to reach high shelves, low cabinets, underneath sinks, etc. for cleaning and access to food and supplies.

8) Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 25 lbs. (dietary trays, food and drink containers, cleaning supplies and tools, chairs, etc.) and to occasionally lift and carry 25-50 lbs. (sacks of flour, filled trash bags, bulk food containers, etc.).

9) Ability to push and pull up to 75 lb. carts on a frequent basis and 75-125 lb. carts on an occasional basis.

10) Ability to function in extreme temperatures ranging from working near hot ovens to entering walk-in cooler or freezer.

11) Ability to understand and follow verbal and written recipes, menus, and instructions for special diets, use of equipment, cleaning supplies, etc.

12) Ability to relate well to employees and provide friendly and courteous service to Sisters and guests.

Position Relationships:

This position is supervised by and accountable to the Food Service Manager or other assigned supervisor. The Dietary Aide will work or coordinate with other dietary staff, Sisters and guests, and employees on other service teams.

Required Duties:

1) Operating stoves, ovens, mixers, slicers, coffee makers, dishwashers, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and other appliances and equipment as needed for food preparation, serving, and cleaning.

2) Analyzing quality of food products for flavor, texture, temperature, and aroma through regular consumption of meals prepared; taking appropriate action to correct any deficiencies in food quality.

3) Using hand utensils for mixing, peeling, cutting, stirring, scraping, slicing, etc. as needed for food preparation, serving and cleaning.

4) Moving and storing food and supplies in cabinets, refrigerators, freezers, walk-in coolers, on shelves, and in other locations.

5) Cleaning and maintaining equipment and appliances.

6) Sweeping, wet mopping, dusting, washing dishes by hand, cleaning ovens, trays, carts, refrigerators, counters, and other areas.

7) Serving Sisters in dining room by placing food and drinks on trays following a selected menu and delivering to tables.

8) Placing food and drinks on trays following a selected menu, placing trays on carts, and delivering to third floor.

9) Filling containers with salt, pepper, sugar, syrup, etc. and pouring drinks from pitchers and coffee makers.

10) Bagging trash, carrying outside, and placing in dumpster.

11) Working days and hours as scheduled including staff meetings and required training; properly using time clock; completing and submitting forms for missed punches, paid leave use, time off requests, etc.

12) Other duties as assigned by the Food Service Manager.
