Job Summary: The Library/Media Teacher is responsible for helping students develop the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to become effective, self-directed readers and learners as adults. In addition, the library/media teacher is responsible for maintaining effective communication with teachers in order to provide supplemental materials and services to support and enrich the curriculum. This person provides leadership in the use of current technologies of instruction related to information-gathering techniques. Instructs in accordance with Naugatuck teacher job description.
Plans and administers the school media program, working cooperatively with staff and administration.
Develops budget requests in consultation with the principal and the Director of Instruction.
Coordinates the selection, organization and distribution of materials and equipment to provide a facility that functions as the information center of the school.
Develops a climate that encourages students and teachers to take full advantage of the library/media center and its resources.
Provides classroom lessons on effective library/media center use to align with curricula and instruction in the use of technology as applied to information retrieval and presentation.
Provides access to resources outside the school through network technology.
Provides programs to reinforce an interest in varied independent reading (book talks).
Encourages student interest in and use of varying forms of media (computers, digital equipment, Internet).
Acts as a liaison between school and community libraries.
Supervises aides, and/or volunteers (parents and students) who assist in performing routine clerical duties necessary for the operation of a library/media center.
Recommends and establishes procedures for selecting, ordering, cataloging, processing, organizing and circulating library/media materials for optimum accessibility.
Performs additional duties, where appropriate, which are assigned within the scope of employment and certification.
