Job Summary

The MN Indian Affairs Council is looking for their next Cultural Resources Specialist. As a Cultural Resources Specialist, you will insure, direct, and fulfill statewide compliance of projects on, or in all public or private lands or waters in Minnesota in relation to the requirements of Minnesota Statute 307.08 (Private Cemeteries Act), Minnesota Statute 138.40 (Field Archaeology Act), and other laws and regulations including Federal Public Law 101.601, the Native American Graves Protection and the Repatriation Act. This position makes appropriate decisions regarding burial, archaeological or historic sites that are related to American Indian history or religion as its expert in this highly technical field of expertise. This position maintains close working relationships with Tribal Nation Governments, American Indian communities, and a diverse array of public and private partners on the local, state, and federal level. This position establishes, develops, and manages these relationships through regular and effective communication, collaboration, coordination, consultation, and negotiation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must clearly demonstrate all of the following qualifications in their resume:

  • Three years of professional experience field experience evaluating American Indian archaeological sites (both pre-contact and historic)

  • Experience working with one or more of the Tribal Nations of Minnesota

  • Knowledge and or experience working with relevant state statutes and federal laws

A degree in Anthropology, American Indian studies, Archeology or other related degree will substitute for professional experience, as follows:

  • Master’s degree = 18 month of experience

  • Bachelor’s degree = 12 months of experience

  • Associates degree = 6 months of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with MIAC’s vision, programs, policies, procedures, programs, and business goals

  • Experience working in the American Indian Community.

  • Experience in leadership, planning, and project management
