Overview

The Senior Accountant is responsible for post award financial administration of grants, contracts and other sponsored projects. This position is also responsible for individual award monitoring and general ledger functions. The Senior Accountant serves as the primary point of contact for sponsor financial audits.

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reviews Principal Investigator portfolio via monthly financial audit reports and discusses potential risks with Research Business Coordinator.
  • Monitors subcontract expenditures.
  • Monitors program income including monthly transfer to reduce directs off of primary award.
  • Performs ancillary impact analysis for internal and external awards.
  • Audits and resolves expenditure issues related to internal and external awards.
  • Monitors special terms and conditions
  • Approves non-labor cost transfer requests and processes non-vendor transfers via journal entries.
  • Responsible for the accurate and timely closeout of awards.
  • Reviews and submits Financial Status Reports and any other external financial reporting. Responsible for reporting cost share, program income and relinquishing statement.
  • Analyzes ad hoc reporting requests to determine if existing report will meet needs or whether a new system report is needed.
  • Serves as primary point of contact for external (sponsor) financial audits.
  • Assures compliance with all federal, state and internal regulatory restrictions.
  • Works closely with members of Research Accounting department, Sponsored Projects department, Principal Investigators and internal/external auditors on issues related to responsibilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Reports to: Research Accounting Manager

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required.
  • Three to five years’ experience in general ledger accounting experience required, with grant accounting experience preferred.
  • Windows-based integrated accounting software experience and strong aptitude for other software programs including Microsoft Office suite required.
  • Analytical and organizational skills required to identify and resolve operational issues (procedural or systems).
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, written and oral communication skills.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment.
  • Demonstrate collaborative and respectful behavior.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
