Position Summary
The Senior Microbiologist position will provide direct support to DoD and USG sponsors over a capability area centered on CBRN related aspects of biological defense and will be responsible for providing support for countering weapons of mass destruction (CWMD) research programs. Responsibilities will include the facilitation of projects focused across multiple aspects of biological defense including biological detection, identification and response while directly collaborating with NSRI staff and other entities within the CWMD community.
Responsibilities will involve the integration of programmatic, technical, systems engineering, cost, schedule, and performance and resource elements of assigned projects. Additionally, the Senior Microbiologist will help identify and develop business opportunities that support DoD and other USG sponsors.
The primary place of duty will be Fredericksburg, VA. Periodic travel will be required to University of Nebraska System Campuses, NSRI Field Offices in Nebraska, Florida and Maryland and other locations based on project needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide technical contributions as a senior scientist regarding all aspects of biological defense and participate as a member of a team to accomplish all stated and implied project related tasks.
  • Develop biological defense research, development, and testing capabilities at both NSRI and partner facilities to aid in the building of long-term strategic resources and the facilitation of immediate project needs.
  • Collaborate directly with project sponsors, stakeholders, University of Nebraska staff, and NSRI staff to develop and execute project plans, timelines, and strategies to facilitate successful completion of project goals.
  • Develop, execute, and defend the cost, scope, performance, and schedule for assigned projects
  • Report project status, written and orally, both internally and externally
  • Implement and manage change when necessary to meet project outputs
  • Execute and manage day-to-day laboratory duties associated with assigned projects
  • Lead and/or contribute to multiple projects simultaneously
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or molecular biology from an accredited university or college
  • 5 years technical experience working in support of DoD, USG or related projects
  • 5 years’ experience creating protocols and conducting experiments in a laboratory environment
  • Familiarity with project budgeting and tracking
  • Excellent written and oral skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience working as a part of a multi-functional team
  • Ability to achieve and maintain a DoD SECRET security clearance
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering from an accredited university or college
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Desired Qualifications
  • PhD degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry or molecular biology
  • Experience in CBRN related mission area
  • Current DoD security clearance
  • Prior military experience
