The National Science Foundation is seeking qualified candidates for a Mathematician (Science Advisor) position within the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS), Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS), Alexandria, VA.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a closely related field plus after award of the Ph.D., six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position.

Candidates must have good communication skills and be able to represent the breadth of mathematical sciences in a wide range of settings; the ability to participate in the leadership of a research organization; a record of accomplishments in his or her field; an ability to recognize current and emerging scientific trends and recommend new directions.

Responsibilities:

The Science Advisor will serve as an advisor for DMS by contributing to strategic leadership and stewardship of new directions within the Division, and coordinating special projects, workshops, and initiatives with DMS staff/leadership. The Science Advisor serves as part of the DMS 'Front Office', which includes the Division Director, Deputy Division Director, Program Support Manager, Operations Specialist for DMS. The advisory contribution at this level is with respect to all phases of the broad scientific research areas for which DMS is responsible. The incumbent works under the policy guidance of and is responsible to the Division Director for the effective, equitable and efficient management of all assigned activities.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

Strategic leadership and stewardship:
Assist the Division Director and Deputy Division Director and Senior Management Staff in identification and development of emerging areas of Mathematical Sciences, through analysis of program data and trends, and organization of seminars and workshops relevant to mathematical sciences. Assist in implementation of and oversight for a strategic planning process that integrates program planning and oversight, leading edge discussions, with the budget development process within and across the organization. Assist in development of implementation strategies within DMS for NSF strategic goals and cross-cutting initiatives. Provide advice and assistance in the development and revision of suitable internal program structures, the arrangement of program and project goals and levels of effort, and the continuing review, evaluation, and coordination of DMS activities.

Special projects, workshops, and initiatives:
Coordinate special projects, innovative activities, and programs within the Division, including defining their purpose and identifying areas of emphasis. Participate in succession planning for the Division, including identification of a diverse pool of rotating Program Director candidates. Further equal opportunity through fair treatment of women, minority groups members, and persons with disabilities, and sensitivity to the issues involving these groups in the workplace and in advice rendered. Participate in NSF efforts to broaden participation in the STEM workplace through its policies and programs. Assist the Division Director and Deputy Division Director in Divisional management activities, including processing of eJacket recommendation actions, Staff Travel Approvals, Guest Travel approvals, and approvals of Highlights.

Coordinate activities associated with international collaborations and partnerships:
Assist the Division Director and Deputy Division Director in Divisional management on international collaborations and partnership activities.

Outreach and interagency coordination:
Represent the Division of Mathematical Sciences, as required, on working groups, outreach activities, and at interagency meetings. Assist in managing the DMS Committee of Visitors, including coordinating agendas, following through on action plans, developing material for review, including coordinating COVs through the division and the MPS Advisory Committee.
