We seek dedicated people who believe they have the skills and ambition to succeed at NREL to apply for this role.Job DescriptionThe wind hybrid systems group is seeking a highly experienced Principal Researcher with a distinguished international reputation in the fields of Energy Systems and Community Energy Transitions. The successful candidate will be a leading authority in areas such as sustainable energy technology deployment, utility systems, and microgrid implementation. This role requires a visionary who can shape long-range strategies on innovative energy programs and technologies for global impact at the community level.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support multiple technical assistance and deployment programs as a subject matter expert (SME) in specialized fields such as utility systems, utility policy and regulatory issues, microgrids, and grid modernization options analysis.
  • Develop and champion long-term strategies and policies that address global energy challenges.
  • If requested, provide SME guidance and technical assistance to state and local jurisdictions and government officials, including international engagements.
  • Improve public understanding of energy transitions practices through high-profile reports and publications, which are considered of historical importance.
  • Mentor and develop junior staff, fostering a culture of innovation, excellence, and impact.
Basic QualificationsRelevant PhD and 15 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 18 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 20 or more years of experience . Exhibits an exceptional degree of ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness. Apply and/or develop highly advanced technologies, scientific principles, theories and concepts. Viewed as an international expert within the field. Demonstrates leadership of complex technical projects. Project management competence. Demonstrated management of complex and/or high impact projects. Outstanding technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of the deployment and integration of energy technologies, including renewable energy, grid modernization, and energy efficiency technologies. Familiarity with regulatory issues and policy development related to energy and the environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with diverse utility, community, and state-level stakeholders and articulate complex technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Extensive experience in leading complex energy projects with a focus on utility planning, microgrid deployment, and energy regulation and policy.
  • Recognition in the field, evidenced by significant contributions to peer-reviewed publications and/or receipt of prestigious awards.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Significant relevant experience in energy systems, utility management, or sustainable energy projects working directly with or in governmental agencies, especially at the state and local levels, is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and set strategic vision for program and project development.
  • Proven track record of successful stakeholder engagement and partnership development, particularly with diverse stakeholders at the state and local scale as well as with international entities.
  • Exceptional ability to navigate and influence the energy transition landscape, particularly within underserved/disadvantaged communities as well as rural cooperatives.
  • Innovative approach to developing microgrid and decarbonized grid solutions for all types of utilities.
  • Strong program development capabilities and experience in mentoring junior staff.
  • Professional background in electrical engineering with deep practical and theoretical knowledge of energy systems.
  • Engagement experience in emerging geographies of critical interest including: the Southeast, Gulf Coast, and Midwest/Appalachian states with rapidly transitioning energy economies.
