? This position supports the Vanishing Treasures Program, Intermountain Region of the National Park Service and may be performed remotely. Projects under this agreement are intermittent in nature and are projected to begin in calendar year 2022.? The NPS Experienced Services Program is a unique partnership created to help solve the workforce issues facing government agencies. The program connects experienced workers (age 55 ) to the NPS to provide scientific, technical, and administrative support.? NPS ESP positions are meant to provide temporary, project-based support. This position is currently funded for an estimate of ~65-70 hours, with additional funding possible in the future.? A background security investigation may be required prior to the start date. Only those positions with 30 hours per week are eligible for health insurance benefits; all positions will accrue sick leave. ? The experienced workers participating in the Program are referred to as ?Enrollees? and are not employees of the NPS or NOWCC. NOWCC is the ESP non-governmental organization responsible for administrative aspects of the program, and the Enrollees work under NPS direction to assist the Agency staff in carrying out their mission. NPS ESP Enrollees benefit from the opportunity to keep technical skills current; to access new training opportunities; to engage in gainful project-based positions; and to undertake meaningful tasks using their experience and talent to contribute to the environment, the national economy, and their own financial security.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience in Historic Preservation, Conservation or related OR BA/BS Degree in Historic Preservation or related

  • Significant experience providing guidance on complex historic preservation issues that is professionally competent and in accordance with relevant laws, policies and standards; experience developing and executing multi-disciplinary projects focused on the study, documentation, assessment, treatment and monitoring of archeological sites and historic structures; knowledge of technical and science-based approaches to the documentation and treatment of archeological sites and historic structures; knowledge of traditional building techniques and materials; knowledge of materials analysis equipment and procedures.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel
Duties:

Projects will be conducted on an ?as-needed? basis in response to technical assistance requests from individual parks.

  • Conduct condition assessments on architectural materials including masonry, adobe, wood and plaster. Determine likely causes of deterioration. Provide information in written format to VT and/or park staff. 40%
  • Provide and implement recommendations for mitigation, repair or replacement of materials that will address deficiencies and help to assure the long-term preservation of the resource that will meet the Secretary of the Interior?s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. 30%
  • Conduct field and laboratory analyses of architectural materials to determine original components and formulations. 15%
  • Provide mentorship to new and existing conservation professionals in the NPS and VT Program. 10%
  • Other projects, reports or studies as identified by the Vanishing Treasures Program. 5%
Other:
  • Overnight travel: 3-5 nights per month
  • Air travel anticipated: 2-3 trips per performance period
  • Rental cars: 5-6 days per month
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Health and safety considerations vary from site to site. Possible considerations include weather-related hazards (extreme heat or cold, rain, wind), hiking-related hazards and general construction site safety. Guidance and training will be provided on an as needed basis depending on project conditions.
  • Required Safety Gear: PPE will be provided when necessary.
  • Physical requirements: Ability to work in varied and extreme environments, hike or walk in rugged terrain, and work in confined spaces.
