Staff Clinician

Office of the Clinical Director

The Division of Intramural Research (DIR) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is seeking to recruit an outstanding Staff Clinician to support the clinical program of the Office of the Clinical Director (OCD), NHLBI. The mission of the NHLBI Division of Intramural Research (DIR), otherwise known as the Bethesda Labs, is to perform robust scientific and clinical research that leads to a better understanding of biology and clinical pathology. To attain this goal, we have built a strong basic science foundation and coupled it closely with innovative technology development and outstanding clinical research, both at the NIH Clinical Center and in partnership with local hospitals. The purview of our research is broad, encompassing investigations into the basic principles of molecular, cellular, and organ-level biology and their relationship to disease.

The candidate for the position will provide critical clinical services for the Hematology Consult Service (30%), act as a liaison to the Center for Cellular Engineering (CCE) (40%), and develop new global adoptive cell therapy programs (30%). The Hematology Consult Service conducts consultative hematology evaluations and research for diseases that affect blood coagulation, bleeding and clotting conditions, blood transfusion, blood immune and non-immune cytopenias, and blood cancers. Specific evaluations and projects aim to answer clinically relevant questions using methods ranging from molecular level studies up to and including clinical laboratory assessments involving coagulation, bleeding, clotting, clonal disorders, marrow failure, and hematologic dysfunction. The staff clinician will serve as an attending physician for the Consult service, which involves evaluating and managing patients with complex hematologic disorders, supervising and educating trainees, and may conduct attending responsibilities for the care of other hematology patients within the Clinical Center.

The staff clinician will work directly with the CCE to develop cellular therapy products and protocols. Specifically the staff clinician will assist with cell therapy manufacturing for NHLBI protocols, particularly to support phase I and II clinical trials at the NIH clinical center. The staff clinician will manage the development and progress of cellular therapy protocols to identify and implement novel advancements in manufacturing, while upholding compliance with medical and scientific standards in line with FDA approval requirements. Then, through coordination with the CCE and NHLBI investigators, the staff clinician will develop the clinical protocol and monitor at the early phase of implementation to identify and address hurdles in cellular therapy production and medical complications after infusion of the therapy. The staff clinician will maintain the highest standards of medical and scientific integrity by ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and ethical guidelines. As a member of the Adoptive Cell Therapy Toxicity Team, the staff clinician will also assess and manage patients with complications of cellular therapy, develop guidelines related to complication of cellular therapy, develop processes within the NIH for implementation of treatments, and spearhead cellular therapy educational initiatives for scientists and clinicians.

Finally, the staff clinician will play a key role in developing new global cell therapy programs, one of the strategic initiatives of the DIR Scientific Director. While in the early stages, the goal of this program is to create new global sites for clinical trials. The staff clinician will play a critical role in the following areas: outreach, operations, and clinical care. The existing faculty in the NHLBI DIR is an outstanding group of internationally recognized biomedical researchers covering a wide range of basic and clinical research topics (please see https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/research/intramural) complemented by the other research institutes within the DIR (please see http://www.nih.gov/science/#campus).

The successful candidate should be board-eligible or board-certified in Hematology, Oncology, and Transfusion Medicine. The candidate should have significant experience in cellular engineering, gene therapy, and good manufacturing processes. Applicants must have a M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments.

Appointees may be US citizens, resident non-citizens, or non-resident non-citizens with or eligible to obtain a valid employment authorized visa.
