Automation and Controls Engineering Manager

SUMMARY

National Bulk Equipment (NBE) in Holland, Michigan, is a rapidly growing manufacturer of automated bulk processing and reclamation equipment for customers in diverse markets around the globe. From small startup operations to Fortune 100 companies, NBE’s integrated project capabilities are relied on to automate customers’ processing and packaging operations. NBE is looking for an Automation and Controls Engineering Manager to guide them into the future of process automation and controls system integrations.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for advancing NBE’s controls strategy development and implementation for industrial automation solutions that are engineered to the customer’s specific application. A thorough understanding of existing control system platforms and a desire to incorporate rapidly changing advancements in technology are a must. This position requires experience with industrial machine design and automation using electric, hydraulic, and pneumatic devices and instrumentation. The successful candidate for this position should be an experienced automation engineer with excellent automation and communication skills having executed leadership and supervisory roles in recent employment history.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Responsible to develop the Automation and Controls Engineering Department through leadership, experience, positive attitude, encouragement, and mentoring. Strive to achieve the highest level of quality and performance from each team member.

Oversee control system designs and manage team to provide quality results by helping to:

  • Identify design requirements through collaboration with customers. It is important to have deep-level discussions about functionality, driving down to what the end user is trying to achieve with the system. The outcome of these discussions is the functional specification document, which details the blueprint for the operation and functionality of an automation project.
  • Direct the electrical/hydraulic/pneumatic design, peripheral device programming, machine PLC programming, coordinate the machine debug, power-up and machine validation with the appropriate build and electrical teams.
  • Further implementation of AutoCAD Electrical automation features to improve system design efficiencies.
  • Recommend process improvements and other cost saving measures.

Must be able to implement National Electric Control (NEC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code related and code change training for electrical staff.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Knowledge and understanding of manufacturing processes and how to apply automation to achieve optimum cost and quality results. A solid understanding of engineering documentation such as Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), process flow diagrams and standard operating procedures.

  • Extensive experience with field instrumentation, and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) based control systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field is required.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in food processing, chemical and pharmaceutical markets.
  • Experience of implementing automation/electrical solutions and writing software code.
  • Experience working with cross functional manufacturing and related teams to develop and implement controls and automation improvements and automation systems.
  • Experience with machine safety systems and proper application of those systems.
  • Experience and knowledge with Risk Assessments and being part of a Risk Assessment Team.
  • Fundamental knowledge of hazardous locations to evaluate the safest approach for electrical design.
  • PLC programming software experience with other than Allen-Bradley software may be considered, i.e., Siemens, Automation Direct, Modicon, Ignition depending on relevance and experience level.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley® MicroLogix™ and/or ControlLogix® or CompactLogix™ control systems.
  • Experience with modern Human Machine Interface (HMI) technology and programming to include Alarming, Data Logging, Trending, and Reporting
  • Experience with CE, UL & C/UL Design requirements.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as vector analysis, exponents, logarithms quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Pay: $68,137.56 - $127,770.31 per year
