Direct imaging of extrasolar planets around nearby stars requires suppression of light from the parent star by up to ten orders of magnitude at visible wavelengths. We are creating and testing various optical designs to suppressing scattered and diffracted starlight to enable the discovery and characterization of extrasolar planets with space-borne instrumentation on future missions, such as WFIRST and LUVOIR.
