National Aeronautics and Space Administration... is Hiring an Astrophysics: High-Energy Gamma-Ray Astronomy with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope Near Greenbelt, MD

Description

The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has been collecting high-energy gamma rays since August 2008. The main instrument, the Large Area Telescope (LAT) is a pair-conversion telescope that observes gamma rays with energies from 20 MeV to above 300 GeV. The observatory is conducting an ongoing all-sky survey that is very well-suited for multiwavelength and transient studies. The LAT explores an important window on a wide variety of high-energy phenomena, including active galaxies, the optical-UV extragalactic background light, pulsars and their nebulae, gamma-ray bursts, and supernova remnants, as well as searching for new astrophysical and particle phenomena. The second instrument, the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) provides spectral and timing information for gamma-ray bursts in the 8 keV to 40 MeV range. As part of the LAT collaboration and home to the mission operations and science support centers, Goddard is involved in many aspects of operations and science analysis. The Fermi team at Goddard offers opportunities to pursue topics over the broad range of astrophysics accessible to the LAT.
